After sharing my excitement about hosting outdoor gatherings for the Fourth of July, I received numerous requests from readers eager to peek inside my “Party Closet.” This dedicated space is a game-changer for anyone who frequently welcomes family, friends, and other guests into their home. It stands as my number one secret for making home entertaining incredibly easy and enjoyable.
Following a bustling holiday weekend filled with overnight guests, my Party Closet worked tirelessly and was in need of a thorough straightening. This provided the perfect opportunity to capture some photos and give you an exclusive tour of its contents and organization.

The Genesis of My Party Closet: From Basket to Dedicated Space
My Party Closet resides in what I affectionately call the “hallway of darkness,” also known as the “hallway of many doors.” When we first moved into this house, I wasn’t entirely sure how I would utilize these multiple closets. However, drawing inspiration from my successful “party basket” concept, the idea blossomed into expanding one of them into a full-fledged Party Closet. This strategic decision transformed a potential storage dilemma into an indispensable hub for all our entertaining needs.
This central hallway features four classic 6-panel doors, which I painted a crisp white, alongside a set of bifold doors concealing our laundry area. This combination of practical storage and necessary utility makes the hallway a central, albeit often overlooked, part of our home’s functionality.

You might recall my previous project where I created DIY French Enamel look signs. These charming signs adorn each door, not only labeling the contents behind them but also infusing the hallway with a touch of character without introducing any visual clutter. This simple yet effective decorative element aligns perfectly with my philosophy of blending functionality with personal style, even in the most utilitarian parts of the home.

This busy hallway has seen its fair share of makeovers and updates under my care. I’ve refreshed the walls, transformed the powder room, organized the China Closet, and revitalized the laundry area. I even added a clever faux transom with mirrors to enhance the space. Curiously, the Party Closet itself remains one of only two areas in my entire house that hasn’t received a decorative touch or a fresh coat of paint – apart from organizing its contents, of course. The other untouched area is the walls in the entry/foyer, but that’s a story for another day. Today, our focus is on bringing the Party Closet up to par.
Inside the Party Closet: Your Command Center for Effortless Entertaining
A well-stocked Party Closet is more than just storage; it’s a strategic command center for effortless entertaining. It ensures you’re always prepared, whether for a spontaneous get-together or a meticulously planned celebration. For me, it means having everything at my fingertips, eliminating last-minute dashes to the store and reducing pre-party stress.

My current setup efficiently organizes smaller items in various baskets, neatly arranged on the top shelves. These particular baskets previously served a similar purpose in the pantry of my previous home, proving their versatility. The remaining shelves are dedicated to a comprehensive array of entertaining essentials, including liquor, mixers, stacks of paper plates, plastic drink glasses, an assortment of serving and mixing pitchers, my trusty cardboard trays for easy transport, utensils, candles, and much more. This diverse collection ensures that no matter the occasion, I have the necessary supplies readily available. While the functionality is there, as you can see, the walls and shelves currently sport a rather dingy off-white hue, indicating a much-needed refresh is in order.
Essential Categories for Your Party Closet: Stocking for Success
To truly maximize the potential of your party closet and become a master of stress-free entertaining, consider stocking it with items across several key categories:
-
Tableware & Disposables: Beyond the basic paper plates and plastic cutlery, think about having a small stash of reusable plates and cutlery for more eco-conscious or slightly fancier casual gatherings. Keep a variety of napkin styles – plain white for everyday, and some patterned or colored options for special themes. Don’t forget sturdy disposable bowls for salads or desserts, and perhaps some compostable options if that aligns with your values. Having these on hand means you avoid a frantic search or an emergency run to the store when guests arrive unexpectedly.
-
Drinkware Delights: This includes not only plastic drinking glasses for outdoor use but also a selection of wine glasses, water glasses, and even a few cocktail glasses for mixed drinks. Consider stocking up on fun drink accessories like straws (reusable or paper), drink markers, and stirrers. Essentials like an ice bucket, tongs, and bottle openers/corkscrews are non-negotiable for a well-equipped bar area. Having enough glassware, both disposable and reusable, ensures smooth beverage service for any size crowd.
-
Serving Solutions: A good party closet features an array of serving pieces. This can range from large platters for appetizers, sturdy serving bowls for sides, to various pitchers for water, iced tea, or pre-mixed cocktails. My cardboard trays are invaluable for transporting food from the kitchen to outdoor areas with ease. Think about different sizes and materials – some lightweight for casual use, and perhaps a few more decorative pieces for presentation. Serving utensils like salad tongs, serving spoons, and cake servers are also crucial for elegant food presentation and convenience.
-
Bar & Beverage Essentials: My closet currently holds a substantial collection of liquor, much of it leftover from my daughter Kelly’s wedding (a testament to diligent event planning!). Alongside spirits, I keep an assortment of mixers like sodas, tonic water, and juices, ensuring a range of drink options. Shelf-stable garnishes such as olives, cocktail onions, and dried fruit slices can elevate any drink. A functional bar setup also benefits from bottle stoppers, jiggers, and shakers.
-
Decorative Touches & Ambiance: Candles, in various sizes and especially unscented, are perfect for setting a mood. Small vases for impromptu flower arrangements, fairy lights for a whimsical touch, or even a few themed decorations that can be rotated seasonally can transform your space. Having these small decorative elements ready allows you to quickly add ambiance without needing extensive party planning.
-
Practical & Emergency Items: Don’t overlook the practical side. Keep a small stash of cleaning wipes for quick spill cleanups, a stain remover stick for those inevitable party mishaps, and even a mini first-aid kit for minor emergencies. Extra batteries for remote controls or string lights, small trash bags for discreet disposal, and toothpicks or skewers for appetizers are also smart additions.

The Upcoming Party Closet Refresh: A New Chapter for Organized Entertaining
My plan is to completely overhaul this space. I will pull every single item out of the closet, give it a thorough cleaning, and then paint the shelves and walls. Opting for a fresh coat of white paint will instantly brighten the area, making it feel cleaner and more expansive. While I’m in the midst of this refresh, I’ll also take the opportunity to edit its contents, removing anything we no longer use or need. This decluttering step is crucial for maintaining an efficient and functional space. Simultaneously, I’ll be adding new, practical items, such as the LAKE LOVING “coozies” we received recently – perfect for keeping drink cans and bottles chilled during our frequent outdoor gatherings.

You might notice the significant amount of liquor stored on the floor. Most of this collection is what remained from my daughter, Kelly’s wedding. We had to purchase a bulk quantity to stock the reception bar, and fortunately, any unopened bottles were returned. We held onto all the opened bottles after the reception, and I’m happy to report we made a considerable dent in that supply while celebrating the Fourth of July this past weekend! It’s a fun reminder of happy occasions and the joy of sharing good times with loved ones.
With the intense summer heat raging outside, I believe this is the absolute perfect time to tackle painting the walls and shelves a crisp white. This will allow the Party Closet to embrace the same fresh and bright aesthetic that characterizes the rest of our home, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere even behind closed doors.
Once the painting is complete this week, I’ll conduct a full inventory, photograph the “after” results, and share all the details of what precisely makes my refreshed Party Closet an entertaining powerhouse.
