• Pencil: For marking cuts and placements.
• Circular saw and miter saw: For precise cuts on wood and the door itself.
• Caulk and caulk gun: To seal gaps and create seamless transitions between different materials.
• Wood glue and Liquid Nails: For strong, durable adhesion of wood trim and other components.
• For brick floor – masonry screws and anchors: Specific fasteners for anchoring wood to a brick foundation.

This trim is unnecessary for our specific design and would hinder the seamless integration we aim for.

3. The key to integrating the door seamlessly into the under-stair space is to match its top angle with that of the staircase itself. We carefully measured the precise angle of the staircase and then used a circular saw to cut the top of the door accordingly. This custom cut ensures that the door fits snugly and appears as a natural extension of the wall and staircase structure.

4. Hollow-core doors have a void inside. After cutting the top at an angle, you’ll expose this core. To reinforce the new angled top and provide a solid surface, we carefully removed a section of the original door’s interior top framing from the cutaway piece. This piece was then trimmed to precisely fit and secure into the newly angled top of the door. We used strong wood glue to hold it firmly in place, ensuring stability and a finished edge.

5. Since we are creating a hidden door without a traditional doorknob, the existing doorknob hole needs to be expertly concealed. We utilized another section of the door cutaway to craft a perfectly sized wood plug for this hole. Using a doorknob drill bit ensures a clean, circular plug that fits snugly. This plug will later be glued, spackled, and sanded to create an invisible repair.

6. Securely anchoring the 2 x 4 frame to the floor is paramount for stability. For our brick floor, we used masonry screws and anchors to achieve a robust connection. For wooden subfloors, standard 2-1/2″ wood screws are sufficient. Ensure all vertical and horizontal 2x4s are firmly attached to adjacent studs or ceiling joists where applicable, creating a solid framework for your new closet.

Phase 2: Constructing the Closet Frame

7. When framing the new wall for your under-stairs closet, precise placement of the floor plate (the 2×4 resting on the floor) is critical. It’s not enough to simply align it with the edge of the staircase. You must carefully account for the thickness of both the sheetrock and the decorative 1″ x 2-1/2″ boards that will form the board and batten facade. The goal is for these finished surfaces to be perfectly flush with the bottom edge of the staircase stringer, creating a smooth and continuous appearance.

This attention to detail ensures that your new wall doesn’t protrude or recede awkwardly. In our case, we needed to leave an offset of about an inch and a half to accommodate these finishing layers. You’ll notice in some photos that we used a variety of 2x4s – some lighter, some darker. This is simply because we utilized leftover materials from other projects, which is a common and cost-effective practice in DIY.

Phase 3: Finishing the Interior & Exterior with Sheetrock and Board & Batten

8. Once your 2 x 4 framing is solid and secure, it’s time to install the sheetrock. Cut the sheetrock panels to fit your framed sections, carefully cutting around the door frame. Secure the sheetrock to the 2x4s using drywall screws. After the panels are in place, apply joint compound over all seams and screw holes. Use several thin coats, allowing each to dry thoroughly, and sand lightly between coats to achieve a perfectly smooth and flat surface. This meticulous preparation is crucial for a professional-looking finish.

Add Board and Batten

9. The board and batten treatment is what truly gives this hidden door its deceptive quality. Begin by installing a 3-1/2″ tall baseboard along the bottom of your new wall. Then, carefully measure and cut your 2-1/2″ wide vertical battens and angled top boards. We spaced our vertical boards approximately 10-3/4″ apart, ensuring a consistent and visually appealing pattern. Attach these boards using a combination of Liquid Nails for strong adhesion and wood screws for added security. The Liquid Nails prevents any bowing, while the screws hold everything firmly in place while the adhesive cures.

10. For a truly professional finish, countersink all wood screws so their heads are slightly below the surface of the wood. Then, fill these screw holes with Spackle or wood filler. Once dry, sand the filled areas smooth, ensuring no bumps or imperfections remain. This step is crucial for achieving a flawless painted surface.

Recall the wood plug we created earlier for the doorknob hole? Now is the time to permanently install it. Apply wood glue to the plug and firmly insert it into the hole in the door. Once the glue has dried, apply Spackle over the plug and surrounding area, feathering it out to blend seamlessly with the door surface. After drying, sand it perfectly smooth. This detail ensures the door appears as a solid, unbroken panel.

Due to our chosen spacing for the vertical battens, one of them naturally fell centered on the hidden door itself. This alignment is key to disguising the door. We meticulously attached this batten using both Liquid Nails and wood screws, ensuring it was perfectly straight and flush. Additionally, we glued and screwed on a top angled board, completing the batten framework and further integrating the door into the wall’s design.

With all the structural components and board and batten in place, the final steps involve meticulous finishing. Thoroughly sand all wood joints and any filled areas to ensure they are perfectly smooth. Next, run a fine bead of caulk along every seam where a board (both vertical battens and the baseboard) meets the wall. This crucial step fills any tiny gaps, creating an absolutely seamless transition between the wood and the sheetrock. After the caulk dries, prime all new surfaces and then apply your chosen paint color. We used Sherwin Williams Pure White 7005 to match our existing trim, resulting in a cohesive and professional appearance.

The Secret to Seamless Entry: Installing Your Magnetic Touch Latch

The ingenious solution for opening and closing our hidden door without the need for a visible doorknob is a simple yet effective magnetic latch. This type of hardware is not only incredibly affordable but also remarkably easy to install, making it a perfect choice for DIY enthusiasts looking to create a truly concealed door.

Complementing the magnetic latch itself, a small metal plate is installed on the inside surface of the door. This plate serves as the target for the magnet on the latch, ensuring a strong and reliable hold when the door is closed. As depicted, the magnetic touch latch meets this metal plate, establishing a secure connection that keeps the door perfectly closed without any visible hardware from the exterior. Initially, the pre-hung door came with standard silver hinges. We attempted to replace these with specialty SOSS hidden hinges, hoping for an even more invisible effect. However, after trying, we found they simply weren’t suitable for this particular application, either due to the door’s structure or the frame’s specific requirements. Instead of forcing a solution that didn’t work, we opted for a practical and visually appealing alternative.

We purchased new, standard door hinges but specifically chose them in a clean white finish. These white hinges were then carefully attached, ensuring they seamlessly blended with the freshly painted white wall and woodwork. While not entirely invisible like the SOSS hinges would have been, their matching color makes them discreet and minimizes their visual impact, maintaining the overall clean and integrated look of the hidden door.
