A well-executed gallery wall can instantly elevate a room, adding significant visual interest and a personal touch. While popular styles range from strict grid patterns to creatively pieced-together frame arrangements, today we’re focusing on a truly unique and immersive approach: a wrap-around gallery wall. This method involves extending your art display across multiple walls, even around corners, ensuring every frame is perfectly straight and impeccably aligned. Step-by-Step Instructions: Your Guide to a Flawless Gallery Wall

Ready to create your own impressive wrap-around art display? Follow these clear, detailed instructions for a smooth and successful project. This method ensures professional-looking results without the typical hassle.

First, let’s gather everything you’ll need.

Supplies Needed:

  • Wall Frames with matting included (ensure they are within the maximum weight capacity, typically 16 lbs. each for large strips). I found great options at IKEA.
  • Two sets of Command™ Medium or Large Picture Hanging Strips for each frame (refer to packaging for specific weight limits).
  • Colored and patterned scrapbook paper (for inexpensive and customizable art).
  • Transparent tape.
  • Scissors.
  • Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl).
  • Bubble level.
  • Yardstick or a long ruler.

Important Note: Always adhere to all Command™ Brand package instructions for proper surface cleaning and preparation, correct adhesive strip placement, and recommended weight claims. For example, four large Picture Hanging Strips typically hold a maximum weight of 16 pounds, so adjust quantity based on your frame weight.

Step 1: Plan Your Layout

Determine the number of frames required to achieve your desired wrap-around effect, whether it’s for an entire room or just a prominent corner. A smart strategy is to arrange your frames on the floor first. This allows you to visualize the spacing between each frame and make any necessary adjustments before committing to the wall. If your design includes a corner, plan the spacing for that section first, then replicate that consistent spacing for the remaining frames.

Step 2: Create Your DIY Leveling Tool

Don’t have a fancy laser level? No problem! You can easily create an effective leveling guide using a yardstick and two sets of Command Picture Hanging Strips. On the backside of your yardstick, attach one set of Command Strips horizontally to each end. The pull tabs can face inward or outward; their direction won’t affect functionality. This DIY tool will be instrumental in ensuring all your frames are hung at the exact same height and perfectly straight across the wall.

Step 3: Prepare Surfaces

Proper surface preparation is crucial for the optimal adhesion of Command Strips. Using isopropyl rubbing alcohol, gently clean the back of all your frames and the wall areas where the frames will be hung. Allow both surfaces to dry completely before proceeding. Do not use household cleaners, as they can leave residues that prevent proper adhesion.

Step 4: Customize Your Art (Optional but Recommended)

For a budget-friendly and custom look, consider using scrapbook paper as your frame art. This allows for endless creative possibilities in terms of color, pattern, and theme. Start by removing the matting from each frame. Cut your chosen scrapbook paper patterns slightly larger than the matting opening to ensure a clean fit.

Securely attach the scrapbook paper to the back of the mat using transparent tape. Once secured, place the mat back into its frame. Repeat this process for all your frames, ensuring a consistent and polished look across your gallery.

Step 5: Prepare Your Command Strips

Each frame will require two sets of Command Picture Hanging Strips. To create a “set,” simply press two individual strips firmly together until you hear an audible click or feel them interlock, as shown in the image. This creates the strong interlocking fastener system that holds your frames securely.

Attach one prepared set of Command Strips to each side on the back of your frame. Position them towards the top corners for maximum stability. Make sure the pull tabs are oriented downwards, ready for easy removal later. Repeat for all frames.

Step 6: Set Up Your Leveling Guide

Now it’s time to apply your DIY leveling tool to the wall. Decide on the desired height for the top edge of your frames. Use your bubble level to ensure the yardstick is perfectly horizontal. Once you’ve found a level line, remove the green liner from the Command Strips attached to the yardstick and firmly press the yardstick onto the wall. This temporary guide will ensure every frame is hung at a consistent height, creating that coveted professional look.

Step 7: Hang Your Frames (Initial Placement)

Begin hanging your frames from the center of your chosen wall section, working outwards to each side. Remove the green liners from the wall-facing side of the Command Picture Hanging Strips on your first frame. Align the top edge of the frame precisely with the top edge of your yardstick guide. Press the frame firmly onto the wall for 30 seconds to ensure good adhesion. I recommend spacing my frames 1-inch apart, easily measured using the markings on the yardstick for consistent spacing.

Step 8: Allow for Proper Adhesion (The Setting Phase)

For optimal hold, the Command Picture Hanging Strips need time to fully bond with the wall surface before bearing the full weight of the frames. After the initial 30-second press, gently remove the frame from the wall. Do this by slowly pulling the bottom of the frame straight towards you, away from the wall. This action will separate the interlocking strips, leaving the wall-mounted strip in place. Allow these wall-mounted strips to set for one full hour. This crucial waiting period ensures the adhesive reaches its maximum strength.

Step 9: Re-mount Your Frames

After the one-hour waiting period, you can re-mount your frames. Align the strips on the back of your frame with the strips on the wall and press them firmly together until you hear a clear “click.” This sound indicates the fasteners have securely interlocked. Repeat this process for all your frames, ensuring each one is firmly attached and perfectly aligned.

Step 10: Remove the Yardstick Guide

Once all your frames are securely in place, carefully remove the yardstick. Hold the yardstick at the bottom and angle it upwards and away from the wall. The Command Strips holding the yardstick should peel off cleanly, leaving no trace.

Step 11: Master Command Strip Removal

Understanding the proper removal technique for Command Strips is essential to protect your walls. To remove the strips cleanly, slowly pull the visible tab downwards (if the strips were applied vertically) or along the wall (if applied horizontally). It is crucial not to pull the tab straight out, but rather to stretch it along the wall surface. This activates the stretch-release technology, allowing the adhesive to detach without damaging the paint or drywall.

Continue pulling the tab, stretching it at least 12 inches along the wall, until the strip completely releases. With the yardstick removed and your frames perfectly hung, step back and admire your beautiful, damage-free wrap-around gallery wall!
