It was a space with potential, but certainly not one that reflected our aesthetic or lifestyle.
As soon as we moved in, the transformation began. The process of removing outdated elements and introducing fresh updates commenced almost immediately and has been a continuous, evolving journey ever since. This ongoing evolution is a part of the joy of homeownership for me. Just as life continually changes and grows, so too must the spaces we inhabit, adapting to our evolving needs and tastes.
One of the most impactful initial changes we undertook was the strategic removal of the wall that separated the kitchen from the living room, which originally housed a cumbersome pocket door. This structural modification was a bold step, but one we knew would dramatically alter the flow and feel of our home. It was about creating a more open, connected living space.
While we handled many projects ourselves, for this significant structural change, we wisely enlisted the expertise of a professional contractor. Their skill ensured the demolition was executed safely and efficiently, laying the groundwork for our desired open-concept living area.
This major renovation took a considerable amount of time and effort, demanding careful planning and execution. However, the outcome proved to be immensely rewarding. The enhanced sense of spaciousness and connectivity between the kitchen and living areas far exceeded our expectations, affirming that the investment was truly worthwhile.
With the wall successfully removed, the immediate and most striking benefit was the doubling of the magnificent lake view. This expansive vista could now be enjoyed seamlessly from both the kitchen and the living room, creating a truly harmonious and breathtaking experience. This single change profoundly influenced the entire aesthetic and functional layout of our home.
Following this initial structural overhaul, every subsequent update and decorative choice within the room became a DIY project. By taking on these tasks ourselves, we were able to significantly save on costs, allowing us to invest our budget strategically while infusing each detail with personal care and craftsmanship.

The mantelpiece itself holds a special story, repurposed from the top section of a dining room hutch from our previous home. Unable to find a suitable place for the entire hutch and with no one else wanting it, we carefully dismantled it, salvaging the beautiful top to serve as our new mantel. This not only saved us money but also infused the room with a unique piece of personal history.
During this initial phase, I hadn’t yet settled on a definitive furniture style for the room. To bridge this gap, we temporarily brought in our outdoor furniture, creating a comfortable yet adaptable arrangement. This allowed us the freedom to gradually acquire new pieces, one at a time, ensuring each selection perfectly aligned with our evolving vision for the space, rather than rushing into decisions.
The long wall in the living room proved to be the ideal and only suitable location for our sofa. I’ve always had a particular fondness for slipcovered sofas due to their practicality and versatile aesthetic. This particular one was initially a tie-on slipcover that transformed a navy blue sofa we brought from our previous home, instantly refreshing its look to suit the new space.
To enhance both functionality and style, I invested in a new console table, positioning it strategically behind the sofa. This addition instantly provided a much-needed surface, perfect for accommodating a lamp that offered essential ambient lighting and served as a display area for carefully selected decorative accessories, adding depth and interest to the room.

Up until that significant moment, no matter what beautiful elements I introduced into the space, the persistent orange tone of the existing floor always felt out of place, clashing with my design aspirations and preventing the room from reaching its full potential. Paradoxically, the only season where the orange-toned floor seemed to blend harmoniously was during the fall. While I wouldn’t opt for Barnwood paneling throughout the entire home, its application as an accent feature in the living room works exceptionally well. Even small details make a difference; I decided to paint the existing ceiling fan white. This simple update allowed it to blend effortlessly with the ceiling, enhancing the room’s airy and unified aesthetic without drawing unnecessary attention.
This wide-angle photograph, while slightly distorting the room’s actual dimensions by making it appear larger, effectively conveys a better overall sense and feel of the space.
