Supplies Needed:
- Wire Basket: A crucial component for creating your cable management station. Look for one sturdy enough to hold power strips and excess cables. (Mine was a dollar store find!)
- Power Strip(s) or Surge Protector: Essential for consolidating your electrical connections. Choose one with enough outlets for all your devices.
- Extension Cord: Select one long enough to comfortably reach your nearest wall outlet from your desk, ensuring it’s not taut or stretched.
- Zip Ties or Velcro Wrap Strips: For securing cables neatly together and attaching the power strip to the basket. Velcro wraps are reusable and adjustable, offering more flexibility.
- 4 – 6 Cup Hooks: These will be used to hang the wire basket securely under your desk. They are generally easier to install than traditional screws.
- Clear Cord Organizing Clips with Adhesive Backs: Specifically, four flat, damage-free cord clips and two organizer clips from a brand like Command. These are excellent for securing individual cords along desk legs or edges without damage.
- Wire Cutters: Necessary for modifying the wire basket and trimming zip ties.
- Wire Mold Cord Protector (Optional, but highly recommended if running cords across the floor): Available at home improvement stores, this protects cords from damage and hides them safely under rugs or along baseboards.

Running a cord under or over a rug requires extra caution to prevent damage to the insulation and to avoid creating a tripping or fire hazard if not done correctly.

This DIY solution transforms a simple wire basket into a versatile cable management station, designed to discreetly hold your power strip and all associated wiring. The basket will be hung upside down beneath your desk using sturdy cup hooks, making it an ideal, out-of-sight hub for your electronics.
- Prepare the Wire Basket
Begin by carefully inspecting your wire basket. Using a pair of wire cutters, snip away one of the corner sections of the basket. This creates an opening that will allow you to easily thread the various power cords and wire plugs into the side of the basket, providing organized access to your power strip once it’s installed. This simple modification ensures all your cables can enter and exit the basket smoothly without being bent or pinched.
- Secure the Power Strip
Next, place your chosen power strip or surge protector inside the modified wire basket, ensuring it lies face up. This orientation makes it easy to plug in your devices. Once positioned, use zip ties or Velcro wrap strips to firmly secure the power strip to the bottom wires of the basket. Tie it down at both ends to prevent it from shifting or falling out when you plug and unplug items. A secure power strip is key to a stable and reliable cable management system.
- Optional: Manage Cords Under a Rug
If your desk is positioned away from a wall outlet and requires an extension cord, or if you have an existing floor outlet like mine, you’ll need to manage the main power cord effectively. If running the main power cord under a rug, it’s crucial to protect it. Measure and cut a piece of rubber cord protector (wire mold) to the exact length needed. Carefully thread the power cord into this protector. Ensure the cord lies flat within the protector and that the protector itself remains flat on the floor to prevent bumps or damage. (I was fortunate to have a floor outlet, which is a fantastic solution for concealing connections directly under the desk.)
- Conceal the Protected Cord
Once the power cord is safely encased within the cord protector, gently lay your rug back over the area to completely conceal the protected cord. - Mount the Basket Under the Desk

- Optional – Utilize Flat Cord Clips for Desktop Items
For desktop items such as lamps, monitor cables, or phone chargers, consider using flat cord clips. These are particularly effective for keeping individual cords tidy and preventing them from trailing across your desk surface. For instance, I used four flat cord clips to manage my lamp cords, keeping them neatly tucked away and directing them towards the back of the desk where they can join the main cable management system.
- Secure Cords Along the Desk Edge
Attach the flat cord clips strategically along the front or side lip of your desktop, depending on where your devices are located and where you want to route the cords. Once the clips are in place, run the individual cords (like those from your lamps or monitor) through each clip. Adjust the spacing of the clips as needed to accommodate the length and direction of your cords and wires, ensuring they are held snugly against the desk and don’t create any visible slack.
- Final Cord Consolidation and Securing
With all your individual cords now clipped into place along the desk, gather the excess lengths of cord and bring them under the desk, towards your wire basket. Carefully weave each excess cord through the wires of the basket, tucking them in neatly. Use another set of cable ties or Velcro wraps to secure these bundled cords within the basket, preventing them from unraveling or dangling. Crucially, leave just enough cord length for each item to comfortably reach and plug into the power strip inside the basket, without any unnecessary tension. For bulky items like laptop power bricks, consider screwing in two additional cup hooks about six inches apart on the underside of the desk to cradle and hold the brick out of sight. This clever trick ensures that even the most cumbersome power adapters are neatly managed. When you need to take your laptop away, you can simply grab the neatly tied cord and unplug it with ease, leaving your desk tidy.
