Our journey to a refreshed home recently culminated in the completion of the final outdoor repair, a lingering task following the destructive path of Hurricane Helene back in September. The storm’s fury had brought a tree crashing down onto our house, specifically damaging a guest room, initiating a long and often challenging home renovation saga.
For a significant portion of the necessary repairs, both interior and exterior, we opted to enlist professional contractors. The initial phase of work saw various teams arrive, diligently tackling the damage, from structural repairs to aesthetic fixes. However, not all experiences with these professionals were seamless.

A notable exception was the contractor tasked with addressing the damaged guest room and kitchen ceilings, specifically removing the dated popcorn texture and re-finishing them. While the work in these areas was eventually completed, the punctuality and communication left much to be desired. Separately, we had already taken on the removal of the popcorn ceiling in our multi-purpose room ourselves, as it had fortunately escaped damage and was not covered by our insurance.
The real challenge arose when it came to our living room. Contractors were scheduled to tackle its ceiling immediately after Christmas. What followed was a frustrating period of unanswered emails and calls throughout January and well into February. Despite their leaving supplies in our garage, suggesting an imminent return after completing the guest room and kitchen, we eventually realized they had ghosted us, effectively abandoning the job. Thankfully, we had paid them incrementally after each room’s completion, so no financial loss was incurred.
This unexpected turn of events presented a choice: wait indefinitely for unreliable contractors or take matters into our own hands. We chose the latter, embarking on an empowering DIY project that transformed our living room.

The living room’s popcorn ceiling became our next DIY mission, executed by the two most reliable contractors we know: my husband, Ed, and my brother-in-law, Dave. Dave, now retired, brought invaluable expertise from his professional painting career. I affectionately dubbed them the “B-B-I-L Contractors” – short for “best-brothers-in-law home improvement services.” Their efficiency was remarkable, swiftly completing all stages: meticulous prep work, popcorn removal, precise spackling, and flawless primer/paint application.
Transform Your Space: A DIY Guide to Popcorn Ceiling Removal
Removing a popcorn ceiling is a surprisingly budget-friendly and achievable DIY project, though it is undeniably a messy endeavor. The key to a successful and clean removal lies in thorough preparation. Every movable item in the room, including furniture, wall decor, and all ceiling fixtures and lights, must be removed or completely covered. This critical first step sets the stage for a manageable clean-up.
The most time-consuming yet essential part of the process is the prep work: meticulously masking the floor and walls with heavy-duty plastic sheeting. This creates a protective barrier, ensuring that the wet, textured popcorn, once scraped, is contained within the plastic. This containment strategy significantly simplifies the post-project clean-up, preventing the messy sludge from adhering to your floors and walls.

Before beginning any popcorn ceiling removal project, particularly in older homes, it’s crucial to consider the potential presence of asbestos. Popcorn ceilings installed in homes built before the 1970s often contained white asbestos fibers. If your home falls within this timeframe, it is highly recommended to obtain an asbestos test kit online and have a sample professionally tested. This simple step can prevent serious health risks associated with disturbing asbestos-containing materials. I personally undertook this precaution back in 2017 when renovating our second-floor bathroom; the test returned negative, allowing us to proceed safely with the removal.
It’s worth noting that removing popcorn ceilings isn’t the only solution. Five years ago, in two other guest rooms, we chose to cover the popcorn texture with Armstrong Woodhaven white planks for a different aesthetic. Interestingly, one of these rooms now boasts a smooth sheetrock ceiling, a direct result of the extensive repairs after the hurricane incident.

With safety measures in place and the room meticulously prepared, the actual removal process can begin. The first step involves thoroughly saturating the popcorn ceiling with water using a pump spray bottle. It’s vital to allow the water to soak in for several minutes. This crucial step encapsulates the popcorn material, softening it and significantly reducing dust during scraping. For particularly stubborn or painted popcorn ceilings, a specialized popcorn removal solution can be used instead of plain water to aid in penetration and softening.
Once sufficiently softened, a wide drywall scraper is used to gently scrape off the wet popcorn texture section by section. The softened material should easily fall onto the protected plastic sheeting on the floor. Work systematically, applying even pressure to avoid damaging the underlying drywall.

After all the popcorn texture has been removed, the real art of finishing begins. We meticulously cleaned the entire ceiling with warm water and rags to remove any residual particles and allowed it to dry overnight. This ensures a clean canvas for the next steps. Next, we carefully inspected the ceiling for any uneven areas, minor imperfections, or small holes. These were meticulously spackled and then sanded until the surface was perfectly smooth to the touch. The goal is to achieve a pristine, level ceiling ready for its new finish.
Finally, a critical coat of high-quality primer was applied. Primer serves multiple purposes: it seals the surface, prevents stains from bleeding through, and ensures a uniform base for the final paint. Following the primer, two coats of Sherwin Williams Ceiling Paint in the color Pure White – 7005 were applied, transforming the room’s overhead into a bright, clean expanse.

Even though our ceilings were already painted white before the popcorn removal, I hadn’t fully grasped how dull and dingy they truly were. It was only after the textured popcorn was gone and the fresh paint applied that the dramatic difference became apparent. The old popcorn texture had absorbed light, creating a less vibrant atmosphere. Now, with clean, smooth ceilings, the rooms feel infinitely fresher and brighter, a testament to the power of this renovation.

Beyond the aesthetic improvement, removing popcorn ceilings can significantly increase a home’s perceived value and modernize its look. It’s a relatively inexpensive upgrade with a profound impact on the overall ambiance and light quality of any space. The fresh, smooth surface allows light to reflect more evenly, making rooms feel larger and more open.
Reimagining Our Living Room: From Repair to Refresh

With the demanding work of ceiling removal and painting complete, it was time for the truly enjoyable part: bringing the living room back to life. I carefully returned the furniture to its place, but opted to keep the arrangement simple for now. This temporary setup allows for a fresh perspective, anticipating a more comprehensive spring refresh. This upcoming seasonal update aims to inject new energy into the space, shaking off any lingering stagnation.

High on the list for this room refresh is updating the cherished family photos displayed on the gallery wall situated between the kitchen and living room. I’ve temporarily removed all the frames, leaving the wall bare. This provides a welcome visual rest, a clean slate. When the gallery is reinstalled, it will feature new images, bringing a renewed sense of freshness and vibrant energy, perfectly timed for the arrival of spring. This intentional pause allows for thoughtful curation and a revitalized display that truly reflects our current life.

For now, I’m simply savoring the beauty of our new smooth, white ceilings. They bring such a profound sense of satisfaction and happiness, a true reward after the hurricane’s disruption and the unexpected DIY challenges. This transformation underscores the power of perseverance and the rewarding feeling of reclaiming and enhancing your home, even when faced with setbacks.
