Every home has its unique dining setup. In my previous residence, a spacious rectangular dining room table was the focal point for holiday gatherings and special events. However, my current lake house presents a different scenario: an intimate eat-in kitchen featuring a round table that comfortably seats six. While I adore the warmth of a classic tablecloth, I also love to showcase the natural beauty of the wooden table itself, making a full cloth less appealing for this particular setting.

The quest for the perfect table dressing for a round table can be a delightful challenge. Traditional placemats, for instance, often overlap awkwardly on a circular surface, disrupting the visual flow and making the table feel cluttered. Multiple table runners could work, but achieving a cohesive and elegant look with several individual runners requires careful planning and often custom sizes. Just as I pondered these decorating dilemmas, a brilliant idea sparked into being, inspired by a delightful delivery.

Inspired by the Season: Crafting a Unique Tablecloth

My creative breakthrough arrived, quite literally, with the monthly delivery of my Waverly Inspirations box. Each month, Waverly Inspirations generously provides me with a curated selection of their beautiful products, challenging me to conjure a unique project that incorporates as many items as possible. For November, the theme was perfectly aligned with my current focus: creating an enchanting Thanksgiving table setting.

This particular month, I was fortunate to receive two boxes! The contents of the first box inspired me to craft a charming Thanksgiving menu chalkboard, a lovely addition to any holiday kitchen. Today, however, using the exquisite fabrics and accessories from the second box, I’m excited to share the creation of a truly unique table adornment – a hybrid design that marries the elegance of a tablecloth with the versatility of a runner, perfectly suited for my round Thanksgiving table. This project allows the beauty of the wood to show through while still adding festive patterns and textures, a perfect solution for my specific dining space.

To further infuse nature into the design, I gathered dried berries from one of the palm trees in my front yard. DIY Thanksgiving Table Runner-Style Tablecloth for a Round Table

Now, let’s dive into the exciting part: creating this unique table runner-style tablecloth, perfect for round dining tables. This project allows you to combine various fabrics, creating a visually rich and textured foundation for your Thanksgiving feast. It’s a fantastic way to introduce autumn colors and patterns without completely covering your beautiful wooden table.

To begin, I made a trip to Walmart to gather additional designs of Waverly Inspirations fabrics, along with some Truffle-colored chalk paint and coordinating brown striped ribbon. The beauty of this project lies in its customizability; you can select fabrics that perfectly match your personal holiday palette and style.

Please note that the measurements provided below are tailored for my 4-foot diameter round table. You may need to adjust these dimensions to best suit the size of your own table. A helpful tip is to lay out your chosen fabrics directly on your table to visualize and determine the ideal size for your runners and the central circle. For my table, each runner measures 15 inches wide by 28 inches long, and the central circle has a diameter of 21 inches.

Supplies Needed for Your Custom Tablecloth: 

• 6 Coordinating Waverly Inspirations Fabrics: You’ll need approximately 1/2 yard of each. The exact amount may vary based on the fabric’s design repeat. Fabrics with an overall pattern or solid colors are generally easiest to work with as you can cut from any part of the yardage. If your fabric has a directional design, ensure you purchase enough to strategically cut to showcase the best part of the pattern in the center of your runner.
• 3/4 Yard of Fabric for the Center Circle: Choose a complementary fabric that will serve as the focal point of your tablecloth.
• 3 Rolls of 7/8-inch Wide Waverly Inspirations Ribbon: This will be used for a beautiful decorative trim around the center circle.
• Matching Thread: Ensure your thread color blends seamlessly with both your chosen fabrics and ribbon.
• Essential Sewing Tools: Measuring tape, sharp fabric scissors (or optional pinking shears for a clean, fray-resistant edge), straight pins, a ruler or straight edge, and a marking pen or fabric chalk.

Step-by-Step Tablecloth Construction:

1. Fabric Arrangement: Once you have selected your fabrics, lay them out on your table to determine their arrangement. I found that placing solid fabrics opposite each other, and similarly for overall patterns and larger prints, created a balanced and harmonious look. (Initially, I considered using burlap for the center, but later switched to a coordinating fabric for a softer finish, highlighting the importance of visualizing and adjusting as you go.)
2. Cutting the Runners: Carefully cut each runner to its desired size. Remember, these are the unfolded dimensions. For my table, each runner was cut to 30 inches wide by 28 inches long.
3. Folding and Pressing Runners: Take each runner fabric piece and fold it in half lengthwise, ensuring the right sides of the fabric are facing each other. Press firmly with a warm iron to create a crisp fold. Repeat this step for all six runners.



4. Creating the Pointed Ends: To ensure uniform pointed ends for your runners, stack all the folded runners neatly on top of each other. Using a ruler or straight-edge and a marking pen, draw a diagonal line from the folded edge to the open edge at the bottom end of the fabric, creating the desired point. (Important: If any of your fabric designs are directional, double-check that each piece is oriented correctly within the stack before marking and cutting to ensure the pattern flows as intended.)



5. Cutting the Runners (Pointed End): With a sharp pair of fabric scissors, carefully cut along the diagonal line you just marked on the stacked fabrics. This will create consistent pointed ends for all your runners.



6. Refining the Runner Shape: Now, fold the entire pile of runners over lengthwise again. Use your marking pen and straight-edge to draw another diagonal mark, mirroring the previous cut but on the opposite side of the point. Cut along this new line. This double-cut method ensures a perfectly symmetrical and sharp point at the end of each runner.



7. Checking the Runner End: Unfold the pile of fabric. The end of each runner should now have a distinct, symmetrical pointed shape, ready for sewing.



8. Sewing the Runners: On each folded runner, sew along the bottom pointed end and the long open side, leaving the top end open. Use a 1/2-inch seam allowance for a sturdy finish. After sewing, carefully notch the corners with your scissors (cutting small Vs into the seam allowance near the point) to reduce bulk. Press the seams open, then turn each runner right side out. Press them again for a professional, flat finish. Repeat this process for all six runners.



9. Crafting the Center Circle: (For illustration purposes, imagine this is your chosen center fabric, not burlap, as I don’t have a specific photo of my final circle fabric in this step.) Fold your 3/4 yard of center fabric in half, right sides together, to create a double thickness. To cut a perfect 21-inch diameter circle, use a push pin to anchor one end of a ribbon or string at the folded center point. Measure 10 1/2 inches along the ribbon (half of the desired diameter) and attach a marking pen or chalk to the other end. Keeping the ribbon taut, draw a perfect semicircle. Cut through both layers of folded fabric along this line. Sew the two layers of the circle fabric together, leaving a small opening (about 3-4 inches) so you can turn the fabric right side out. Once turned, carefully hand-stitch or machine-stitch the opening closed for a neat finish.



10. Arranging the Runners: Lay out the six finished runners on your round table. Arrange them symmetrically so that their top, open ends meet in the center, forming a hexagonal shape where the center circle will eventually sit. This creates a visually pleasing and balanced foundation for your tablecloth. (Yes, “hexagon” – who knew I’d be using geometry in crafting! My high school math teacher would be so proud!)



11. Attaching the Center Circle: Carefully place your sewn fabric circle on top of the hexagonal opening formed by the runners. Use plenty of straight pins to securely attach the open ends of each runner to the underside of the center circle. I recommend using three pins per runner: one at each edge and one in the center, ensuring an even distribution and secure hold.



12. Sewing the Circle to Runners: Take the pinned tablecloth to your sewing machine. From the right side, carefully stitch around the perimeter of the center circle, securing it to the runners beneath. As you sew, gently smooth out the attached runners, ensuring they lie flat and are not bunched up. This seam will eventually be hidden by the decorative ribbon trim, so slight imperfections won’t be visible.



13. Trimming Excess Fabric: Flip the tablecloth over so the wrong side is facing up. Carefully trim away any excess fabric from the runners that extends beyond the sewn seam of the center circle. Using pinking shears for this step is highly recommended, as their zigzag edge will help prevent the fabric from fraying over time, providing a cleaner and more durable finish.

Adding the Finishing Touch: Attaching Ribbon Trim Around the Center Circle

The ribbon trim adds a beautiful, polished finish to your unique tablecloth, concealing the seam where the runners meet the center circle and elevating the entire design. This pleated ribbon detail introduces an extra layer of texture and elegance.

1. Starting the Pleats: Begin anywhere along the edge of the center circle. Lay the end of your ribbon along the edge, then create a small pleat with the ribbon and secure it with a straight pin. Continue this process, making consistent pleats all the way around the circle. You’ll need a generous supply of good quality straight pins to hold everything in place.
2. Joining New Ribbon Rolls: When you need to start a new roll of ribbon, simply overlap the end of the previous roll with the beginning of the new roll, as shown in the photo, and continue pleating. This creates a seamless transition.
3. Finishing the Circle: As you approach your starting point, create the final pleat in the opposite direction, tucking the end of the ribbon neatly underneath the very first pleat. Secure it with a pin.
4. Sewing the Ribbon Trim: Take the tablecloth to your sewing machine. Using thread that perfectly matches your ribbon, carefully sew down the center of the pleated ribbon. (Pro tip for easier sewing: Position the tablecloth so that the ribbon loops are facing away from you as you sew. If they are closer to you, you’d constantly have to hold each loop down, which can be cumbersome.)

Once sewn, give the ribbon trim a gentle press to ensure it lays flat and smooth. Your beautiful, custom-made table runner-style tablecloth is now complete and ready to grace your Thanksgiving table!
