Taped Transformations: Furniture Facelifts

This exciting furniture makeover post is proudly sponsored by Scotch Brand. All creative views and design opinions expressed are entirely my own.

As many of you know, my passion for transforming old, or even new, pieces of furniture into something fresh and unique runs deep. My usual arsenal for these projects often involves various types of paint – from convenient spray paints and versatile DIY chalk paints to durable oil-based finishes. However, today, I am thrilled to unveil a vanity makeover that took an entirely different, incredibly innovative path. Prepare to be amazed, because for this project, I used tape! Yes, you read that correctly – a delightful assortment of masking, Scotch, washi, and even shipping tape brought this vision to life.

What started as a rather uninspired, bland vanity from a thrift store quickly evolved into a fun, hip, and modern statement piece in just one afternoon. This charming vanity now resides in my youngest daughter’s room, adding a vibrant touch. The accompanying mirror, a cherished heirloom, once belonged to my grandmother, carrying its own layer of sentimental value. The no-sew skirt, a DIY project from many years past, effortlessly attaches to the vanity with simple Velcro, completing its soft, inviting look.

While this room once buzzed with activity, it, like my older daughter’s room, has largely become what I affectionately call a “museum of their lives.” After they ventured off to college and beyond, taking with them all the essentials for their adult lives, the remnants of their childhoods remained. These rooms became curated displays of their history, cherished memories preserved and on view. Revisiting and livening up this space was a joyful experience, and with my daughter planning an apartment move in January, this revitalized vanity might just find a new home with her, ready for another chapter.

For this imaginative makeover, I leveraged the incredible versatility of various Scotch Brand tapes. These tapes were instrumental in crafting the dynamic chevron pattern that now graces the vanity’s tabletop and in infusing the vintage mirror with a much-needed splash of contemporary color. The process was not only surprisingly simple but also incredibly satisfying, proving that sometimes, the most unexpected materials can yield the most impressive results.

BEFORE: Vanity & Mirror

The mirror, while sentimental, featured an ornate, old-fashioned design that never quite resonated with my personal aesthetic. The vanity itself had a clever design with a removable top, which greatly facilitated the transformation process. Once I detached the top, I had a flat, manageable surface to begin my tape artistry.

How to: Transform Furniture with Decorative Tapes

Diving into a furniture makeover with tape might seem unconventional, but it offers a fantastic alternative to paint. It’s less messy, requires minimal drying time, and allows for endless creative possibilities with patterns and colors. Follow along to see how this thrift store find got a vibrant second life.

Supplies Needed for Your Tape Furniture Makeover:

  • Scotch Brand Expressions Tapes: A diverse selection is key for visual interest. This project utilized Magic Tape, masking tape, colorful washi tape, and durable shipping tape. The variety in textures, patterns, and adhesive strength makes Scotch Expressions Tapes ideal for such detailed work.
  • Chevron Pattern Template: Essential for achieving precise, uniform lines. You can design your own or use a pre-made one.
  • Small Clear Ruler: Crucial for accurate measurements and straight cuts, ensuring a professional finish.
  • Craft Knife with Extra Blades: Sharp blades are paramount for clean, crisp cuts, preventing jagged edges and ensuring neat adhesion.
  • Pencil: For lightly tracing your pattern onto the furniture surface.

Creating the Chevron Design on Your Vanity Top:

  1. Prepare Your Pattern: Print out your chosen chevron pattern template. For single use, simply cut it out. If you anticipate using this pattern again for future projects, consider tracing it onto a piece of cardboard or sturdy cardstock. This will create a reusable stencil, making subsequent projects even easier.
  2. Position and Trace: Carefully center your chevron pattern template on the furniture surface where you intend to apply the taped design. Using a light touch, gently trace the outline of the pattern onto the surface with your pencil. Remember, every alternating zig-zag line will build upon this initial tracing, so ensuring your first line is perfectly straight and centered is vital for the overall symmetry of your design.
  3. Applying the First Chevron Line: For my vanity, I opted to use four different Scotch Expressions Tapes to create a single horizontal zig-zag line, showcasing a wonderful array of colors and patterns. Carefully follow your light pencil lines as you lay down each piece of tape. At every pointed section of the pattern – both at the top and bottom of the zig-zag – make a precise cut with your craft knife. After each cut and placement, gently smooth the tape with your fingers, pressing down firmly to ensure excellent adhesion and to eliminate any air bubbles.
  4. Precision Cutting with a Ruler: A clear ruler is an invaluable tool at this stage. It makes aligning each cut correctly almost effortless, guaranteeing crisp, sharp angles for your chevron points. The cleaner your cuts, the more professional your finished design will appear.
  5. Refining Each Point: After you’ve made your cuts and smoothed the tape, each point of the zig-zag line should exhibit a clean, sharp angle, perfectly aligned with your traced pattern. Take your time to ensure this precision, as it sets the standard for the entire design.
  6. Building the Pattern: Once your first full zig-zag line is complete and perfectly adhered, begin adding subsequent lines. Continue to follow your traced pattern, experimenting with different colors and patterns of tape. The beauty of Scotch Expressions Tapes lies in their vast variety, allowing you to create a truly unique and personalized look. Continue this process until the entire desired surface is covered, revealing a vibrant, dynamic chevron design.

The Scotch Expressions Tapes used are inherently quite shiny and possess a good degree of durability, so I chose not to apply an additional seal to the vanity top. However, if your piece of furniture is destined for heavy use or high traffic, you might consider protecting your beautiful creation. Options include applying a non-yellowing polyurethane sealant for added longevity, or for ultimate protection, having a custom-cut piece of glass placed over the top of your design. This ensures your tape artwork remains pristine for years to come.

How to Craft Simple Flowers and Leaves for a Mirror Using Masking and Shipping Tapes

Transforming the old-fashioned mirror was a surprisingly straightforward yet highly impactful part of this makeover. Instead of attempting to paint over the existing design, which could be cumbersome and irreversible, I chose to embrace the simplicity and flexibility of tape. This allowed me to completely revamp its look without permanent alteration.

To elegantly conceal the dated design on the mirror, my approach was wonderfully uncomplicated. I simply cut various masking and shipping tapes into organic leaf shapes using my craft knife. The ingenious part? I then strategically placed these tape leaves directly over the existing design elements on the mirror. This method required no measuring, no intricate centering of a new pattern, and no complex calculations – the underlying design served as a perfect guide, making the process incredibly easy and intuitive.

Crafting the Floral Elements:

  1. Cutting the Leaves: Lay out your chosen masking and shipping tapes onto a cutting mat. With your craft knife, carefully cut out simple leaf shapes. Don’t feel restricted by perfect symmetry; natural leaves have charming imperfections. I created a range of sizes to ensure I could effectively cover all parts of the mirror’s original design. To add depth and visual interest, I utilized two different tape designs, creating a beautiful contrast.
  2. Creating the Stems: For the delicate stems, cut thin, elongated, and slightly curved lines from your tape. The flexibility of the tape allows for organic, flowing shapes.
  3. Lifting and Placing: Use a fingernail or the very tip of your craft knife to gently lift the cut leaves and stems from the cutting mat. Their adhesive backing makes them easy to transfer directly to the mirror. Arrange them artistically over the mirror’s existing patterns, building a natural, botanical tableau.

Assembling the Tape Flowers:

  1. Petal Creation: To form the flowers, I began by cutting out a distinct pink circle from a piece of shipping tape. This served as the foundation for the petals. I then carefully cut this circle into four equal, pie-shaped pieces. These wedges would become the individual petals of my charming flowers.
  2. Flower Centers: For the very heart of each flower, I cut out smaller contrasting circles from different Scotch Expressions Tapes. This added a pop of color and definition to the center.
  3. Assembling the Flower: Arrange the four pie-shaped petals around the central small circle on your mirror, creating a blooming effect.

After carefully positioning each component of your tape design – be it the leaves, stems, or flower petals – it is crucial to gently but firmly smooth each piece with your fingers. This ensures optimal adhesion to the mirror surface, removing any trapped air and creating a seamless, lasting finish. The slight pressure helps the tape fully bond, preventing lifting over time.

To Clean Your Taped Surfaces: Maintenance is simple, ensuring your beautiful creation stays vibrant. To clean the mirror or vanity top, avoid spraying glass cleaner directly onto the taped design. Instead, lightly spray a paper towel with glass cleaner and then gently blot over and around the taped areas until clean. This method protects the tape’s adhesive and color, keeping your makeover looking fresh.

Beyond Furniture: Creative Back-to-School Fun with Scotch Expressions Tapes

With some delightful Scotch Expressions Tape leftover from the vanity and mirror project, I couldn’t resist channeling my creativity into some fun, back-to-school themed DIYs. It’s amazing how a simple roll of tape can personalize everyday items and add a touch of joy to mundane tasks.

From the classic charm of old school note-taking to the sleek efficiency of new school methods, personalizing your supplies makes everything more enjoyable. These tape crafts offer a stylish way to make a statement!

Decorating a Composition Book with a Woven Tape Effect:

Transforming a plain composition book into a woven masterpiece is surprisingly simple and creates a sophisticated look. First, I carefully laid strips of tape horizontally across the front cover of the book, spacing them a few inches apart. This formed the foundation of the woven design. Next, I added vertical lines of tape. The key to the woven effect is to meticulously cut away the vertical tape whenever it crossed over an *alternate* horizontal line of tape. By doing this, you create the illusion of strips passing over and under each other, resulting in a beautiful, intricate woven pattern. This technique not only makes your notebook stand out but also adds a unique tactile element.

Personalized iPad Initial with Tape:

Adding a customized initial to my iPad was a fun, temporary way to personalize it. I started by overlapping strips of tape onto a cutting mat until I formed a solid square shape. I made sure this tape square was roughly the same size as a letter stencil I had on hand. Next, I carefully traced the desired letter onto the layered tape with a pen. Using a craft knife, I meticulously cut out the letter. With great care, I then peeled the tape letter from the mat and transferred it onto my iPad. While this was purely for fun and would require a protective cover to last for an extended period, it brilliantly showcased the incredible versatility and adaptability of Scotch Expressions Tapes for quick, creative accents.

And for even more practical personalization, I utilized the colored Scotch Tape to create vibrant, functional divider tabs for the composition book. These simple additions make organizing notes a breeze and add a cheerful pop of color to an otherwise utilitarian item. I remember well the excitement of the first day and week of school, which often faded as classes became more challenging. But I always found solace and enjoyment in having a dedicated space in my notebooks for drawing and doodling whenever I felt bored in class. Did anyone else share this secret habit?

I can almost hear the first-period bell ringing now, signaling the start of another day filled with creative possibilities, perhaps inspired by a bit of tape artistry!
