Embrace the Spirit of Valentine’s Day: DIY Crafts, Free Printables & Heartfelt Decorations
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, a time when hearts flutter, and expressions of love fill the air. For many of us, this special occasion evokes cherished childhood memories, particularly those spent in elementary school. I vividly recall the excitement that buzzed through the classroom during the week leading up to Valentine’s Day.

Every year, our dedicated teachers would set aside the usual curriculum of reading, writing, and arithmetic, dedicating precious class time to the joyous art of Valentine’s Day crafting. This was an opportunity for pure, unadulterated creativity. We would eagerly craft personalized cards for our families and classmates, and meticulously construct charming mailboxes out of paper and cardboard, taping them to our desks, ready to receive the deluge of heartfelt greetings on Valentine’s Day itself.
Armed with construction paper, delicate doilies, trusty glue, and shimmering glitter, I truly excelled. It felt wonderful when my creations were held up as examples for the rest of the class to emulate – a rare moment of academic triumph for my young self!

The Enduring Charm of Handmade Valentine’s Day Gifts and Decor
These cherished memories continue to inspire me each February. As the month approaches, I find myself instinctively gathering all my red, white, and pink crafting supplies. It’s a delightful ritual aimed at finding new and creative ways not only to decorate my home for Valentine’s Day but also to craft unique goodies and gifts for my beloved family and friends. There’s an undeniable warmth and personal touch that comes with a handmade gift or decoration, making it far more meaningful than anything store-bought.

This year is no exception to my Valentine’s crafting tradition. When my daughters were younger, my husband Ed and I loved surprising them with numerous little tokens of affection. While they’ve grown, the tradition of surprise gifts continues, though now often sent through the mail. Fuelled by nostalgia and a desire to spread joy, I delved into my crafting stash and emerged with a collection of charming initial heart gift tags and a festive Valentine banner, perfect for adding a touch of romance to the kitchen.
Your Creative Resource: Free Printable Initial Heart Shapes
To help you infuse your own Valentine’s Day celebrations with a personal touch, I’ve created an entire alphabet of delightful heart shapes. These are available for you to download, print, and cut out, offering a versatile foundation for a myriad of creative projects. Beyond gift tags and banners, imagine incorporating them into handmade cards, unique garlands, party favors, or even classroom decorations. The possibilities are truly endless!
For best results, I recommend cutting scrapbook paper in your favorite Valentine’s colors to an 8 1/2″ x 11″ size. This allows you to easily feed the paper into your home printer and print out these lovely initial heart printables. You’ll find the download links for these .pdfs at the end of this post, ready to bring your crafting ideas to life.

When cutting out your initial hearts, you have the flexibility to cut either inside or outside the printed lines, depending on the aesthetic you prefer. For the banner showcased here, I opted to cut slightly outside the lines, giving the hearts a more prominent and defined edge.
How to Craft a Charming Doily Heart Banner
Creating this festive doily heart banner is incredibly simple and adds a lovely touch to any space. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
- Gather Your Materials: You’ll need a selection of paper doilies (various sizes work well), your printed and cut initial hearts, a hole punch, a length of ribbon or twine, and a glue stick.
- Prepare the Doilies: Take each doily and use a standard hole punch to create two small holes near the top edge. Ensure the holes are spaced evenly and are large enough to easily thread your ribbon through.
- String the Banner: Carefully thread your chosen ribbon or twine through the holes of each doily. You can arrange them in any order to spell out a word (like “LOVE” or “BE MINE”) or simply to create a beautiful pattern. Leave ample ribbon at each end for hanging.
- Attach the Initial Hearts: Using a reliable glue stick, affix one of your personalized initial hearts onto the center of each doily. Press firmly to ensure a good bond. You can mix and match different colors or patterns of scrapbook paper for added visual interest.
- Hang and Display: Once all the hearts are glued, your banner is ready to adorn your home! You can hang it with small tacks, command hooks, or, as I did, by simply tucking the ribbon ends into the corners of a cabinet door for a whimsical display. Consider hanging it across a mantel, a doorway, or even a window for a cheerful Valentine’s welcome.

Unique Valentine Gift Tags: Straw Starburst & Simple Doily Designs
Beyond banners, these initial heart printables, combined with a few simple craft supplies, can transform ordinary gifts into extraordinary gestures of love. I’ve also experimented with creating distinct gift tags using paper straws and doilies, adding an extra layer of charm to my Valentine’s surprises.

Crafting the Eye-Catching Straw Starburst Gift Tag
This starburst gift tag is a fantastic way to add texture and a playful dimension to your Valentine’s gifts. Here’s how to make one:
- Prepare the Straws: Take several paper straws in coordinating Valentine’s colors (red, pink, white) and cut them in half. This will give you more pieces to work with for your starburst effect.
- Create the Starburst Base: Lay out a single paper doily. Using a hot glue gun (with adult supervision if needed), begin to hot glue the cut paper straw halves around the edge of the doily, arranging them in a radial, starburst pattern. Overlap them slightly for a fuller look. Allow the glue to cool and set.
- Add the Top Layer: Once the straw starburst is secure, place another doily directly on top of the straws, securing it with a small dab of hot glue in the center. This covers the raw edges of the straws and creates a neat finish.
- Personalize with an Initial Heart: Glue one of your printed initial hearts onto the top doily. For an extra pop of color and pattern, I cut an additional piece of scrapbook paper into a heart shape and placed it underneath the top doily before adding the initial heart. This layered effect adds depth and visual interest.
- Finish and Attach: Punch a small hole at the top of your finished gift tag and thread a piece of ribbon or baker’s twine through it. This tag is perfect for adorning gift bags, boxes, or bottles, making your present truly stand out.

Effortless Doily Heart Gift Tags
For a simpler yet equally charming option, you can create basic doily heart tags. These are quick to assemble and perfect for larger quantities of gifts or when you’re short on time.
Simply glue your chosen initial hearts or other decorative heart cut-outs directly onto the center of paper doilies. Once the glue is dry, you can either tie the doily onto your gift with a pretty ribbon or twine, or use a small dab of glue to adhere it directly to the wrapping paper. These tags add an instant touch of elegance and personalization without much effort, making every gift feel thoughtfully prepared.
