The Cutting Process: Precision and Safety

- Marking Your Cut Line: Begin by carefully measuring up from the bottom of the cabinets on both the left and right sides of the valance, precisely to the height where you want the scalloped section to be removed. Mark these points clearly with your pencil. Next, use a straight edge (a long level works perfectly here) to connect these two pencil marks, creating a perfectly level line across the entire valance. This line will serve as your guide for cutting. Accuracy here is crucial for a professional-looking finish.
- Making the Initial Cuts: With your safety glasses on and a firm grip on the jigsaw, Ed carefully followed the marked line. When he reached the corners where the valance met the adjacent cabinets, he initially made a rounded cut. This is a common technique with a jigsaw, as its blade allows for curved cuts. Once the main scalloped section was successfully removed and the piece fell out, he went back to each corner. Using a straight edge again, he made precise, straight cuts to square off the corners, achieving perfect 90-degree angles that align cleanly with the cabinetry. After the meticulous work with the jigsaw, this is precisely what the newly cut area looked like. As you can see, the removal of the scalloped section immediately opens up the space and creates a cleaner, more contemporary line. However, the exposed edges were quite rough, a common result of power cutting through wood. This is where the real finishing work begins.

This raggedness is not a cause for concern, as it’s an expected part of the process and will be fully corrected during the subsequent sanding and spackling stages. The key now is to prepare these rough edges for a smooth, paint-ready finish.

Smoothing and Finishing the Edges with Spackle
This specialized drywall tool proved to be an absolute game-changer in transforming those rough edges into a flawlessly smooth surface. It’s known as an outside corner mud or spackle knife, distinct from its counterpart, the inside corner knife, which is shaped differently to handle internal angles. Our goal was to create a beautifully smooth, crisp outside corner along the newly exposed edge where the scalloped valance once resided, and this tool was instrumental in achieving that professional finish. It allows for an even application and perfect angle creation, making a seemingly difficult task much simpler.

Before applying any spackle, our first step was to address the raw, rough wood edges left by the jigsaw. We began with 60-grit sandpaper, which is relatively coarse, to effectively remove any splinters, burrs, or ragged sections and to start shaping the wood. Once these initial imperfections were smoothed out, we transitioned to 100-grit sandpaper. This finer grit allowed us to further refine the surface, making it progressively smoother and more consistent in preparation for the spackle application.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a photograph of Ed in action while spackling, as he completed that part of the project when I wasn’t at home. However, to ensure you fully grasp the technique, I asked him to demonstrate the process on a finished section of the valance so I could capture it. This re-enactment perfectly illustrates how to effectively use the outside corner spackling tool.
- Step 1: Initial Spackle Application. First, take your regular (flat and wide) spackle knife. Scoop a moderate amount of spackle or joint compound onto it. Then, apply a thin, even coat of the spackle to both the bottom and the front edge of the newly cut area. Aim for good coverage without applying too much, as you’ll be shaping it next.

- Step 2: Shaping with the Corner Knife. Immediately after applying the spackle, take your outside corner knife. Position it precisely along the edge of the valance, ensuring it cradles both the front and bottom surfaces. With firm, consistent pressure, glide the knife along the entire length of the spackled edge. This action will simultaneously smooth the applied spackle and sculpt it into a perfectly crisp, new finished corner. Repeat this process as needed to achieve a flawless, sharp corner. Allow this first coat to dry completely, which can take several hours depending on humidity and spackle thickness.

- Step 3: Sanding and Repeating. Once the first coat of spackle is thoroughly dry, use 150-grit or 220-grit sandpaper to gently sand the area smooth. The goal here is to remove any minor ridges, bumps, or imperfections. Be careful not to sand through the spackle. If you find the corner isn’t as perfect as you’d like, or if there are still minor flaws, repeat the spackling and sanding process. Apply another thin coat, reshape with the corner knife, let it dry, and then sand again. Continue this iterative process a few times until you have achieved a truly smooth, pristine new edge. Ensure the final coat is completely dry before moving on to painting.


The Painting Phase: Hiding Imperfections and Blending In
After all the hard work of cutting, sanding, and spackling, we focused on making the new edges look flawless. While we meticulously smoothed the front and underside of the valance as much as possible, a smart painting strategy can help camouflage any remaining minute imperfections. For the underside, where the new light fixture now illuminates the space, I opted for a flat finish paint. The beauty of flat paint is its ability to absorb light rather than reflect it, which effectively minimizes the visibility of any tiny flaws on the surface. This creates a seamlessly smooth appearance, even under direct light.
For the front and side sections of the newly exposed valance, I used the same semi-gloss paint that we had applied to the kitchen cabinets. This choice was deliberate: the semi-gloss finish provides durability and makes it easy to clean, while also ensuring that the updated valance area perfectly blends in with the existing cabinetry and crown molding, creating a cohesive and professional look throughout the kitchen.
A Note on Tools and Valance Types:
As mentioned earlier, some scalloped wood valances are simply screwed into place, making their removal a straightforward task that doesn’t even require a jigsaw.
