This isn’t my first dedicated creative space. In my previous home, I transformed what was designated as the formal living room into my craft sanctuary. Knowing that our family would primarily use the family room for daily living, claiming the formal living room allowed me to realize a long-held dream without sacrificing essential living areas.

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to possess such a dedicated space. Growing up, I always shared a room with my two sisters, and during my college years, shared living spaces were the norm. The idea of having a room entirely my own was a cherished dream, a personal haven for uninterrupted creativity. So, when the opportunity arose in a space I knew would otherwise go unused, I seized it without hesitation. This personal history fuels my appreciation for the studioffice and the freedom it offers.

When we decided to move to the lake, securing a house with a suitable room for my creative business space was high on my “must-have” list. I was overjoyed to find a home where this particular room not only offered the practical advantage of being able to close off from the rest of the house when things get a bit messy, but it also boasts a breathtaking view of the lake. While this vista is undeniably inspiring, it occasionally presents a delightful challenge, as I sometimes find myself spending more time than I should simply gazing out at the serene waters, lost in thought.

The Heart of the Studioffice: A Century of Versatile Storage

The undisputed focal point of my creative space, a fixture even in my previous house, is a magnificent antique armoire. This substantial piece of furniture, a cherished heirloom from Ed’s family, commands attention. For a considerable time, I contemplated various makeover ideas for it, taking great care and patience to ensure that whatever transformation I undertook would be something I would genuinely adore for years to come.

To truly test my vision, I meticulously stripped one of the drawers to reveal the natural wood underneath. This crucial step allowed me to assess whether an unpainted, natural wood finish would suit the piece and my aesthetic. Ultimately, I didn’t find the raw wood appealing enough for the impact I wanted, so I opted for a complete color makeover with paint, transforming its character entirely.

Today, this armoire isn’t just the largest piece of furniture in my studioffice; it holds the distinction of being the most imposing and central piece in my entire house. Its sheer size and presence make it a natural anchor for the room, drawing the eye and providing a sense of grandeur.

What makes this armoire truly extraordinary is its age and ingenious design. It’s a testament to older craftsmanship, built to be disassembled and moved in sections. This armoire has lived an astonishingly rich and varied life, proving itself to be an exceptionally versatile piece of furniture time and time again. Its adaptability is truly remarkable, reflecting a history of transformation that parallels the creative spirit it now helps organize.

A Legacy of Transformation: The Armoire’s Many Lives

The armoire’s journey began in the 1920s, or perhaps even earlier, when Ed’s maternal grandparents acquired it. In its original form, it boasted a medium brown wood finish, characteristic of the era. While its initial contents remain a mystery, this marked the beginning of its long and illustrious history as a functional piece within the family home.

In the 1950s, when Ed’s parents inherited the armoire, they repurposed it to house their growing collection of record albums and various musical items. It was during this period that it received its first major transformation: a vibrant coat of deep orange paint. This bold new color reflected the changing styles of the mid-century, giving the antique piece a distinctly modern flair.

It was in this very deep orange hue that Ed and I inherited the armoire in 1984. Eager to trace its past, I scoured family photo albums, unearthing one precious snapshot where its side is visible. In this particular image, you can glimpse my oldest daughter, then about seven months old, playfully rolling around in the breakfast room of our Durham, NC home. During our time in that house, we cleverly repurposed the armoire as our kitchen pantry, a testament to its enduring adaptability.

After serving faithfully as a pantry for three years in our North Carolina residence, our family moved to Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, the new house lacked sufficient space for the armoire, compelling us to store it in our basement for a year. Our time there was brief, as we soon relocated once more, this time to New Jersey, where the armoire would embark on another fascinating transformation.

During our residency in New Jersey in the early 1990s, the armoire was reassembled and ingeniously repurposed to serve as my personal clothes closet in our bedroom. Our two-bedroom home featured only tiny closets in each room, and with Ed utilizing one, I had to find a creative and efficient solution for storing my wardrobe. To transform the armoire into a fully functional closet, I carefully removed the interior shelves and installed a sturdy wooden pole, perfect for hanging clothes. I further enhanced its utility by affixing a full-length mirror to the inside of the right door and a convenient scarf, belt, and jewelry rack to the inside of the left door. It became an incredibly efficient and organized closet, holding everything except my shoes, which found a home neatly tucked under the bed.

I even added a charming pink floral stencil to its center top, reflecting a popular decorating trend of the time. Do you recall when stenciling was all the rage? While some of the fabric choices featured in the book might appear a bit dated by today’s standards, I encourage you to look past that and envision the projects executed with contemporary fabrics and patterns. The Current Chapter: A Dedicated Craft Storage Cabinet

Four years later, our family made another move back to Pennsylvania, settling into the house where I would eventually embark on my blogging journey. It was here that the armoire underwent yet another significant metamorphosis: I painted it a refreshing antique white, which gracefully erased the previous stencil. I then removed the mirror and clothes rod, carefully reinstalling the shelves. This transformation converted it into its most recent and current incarnation: the ultimate organizational hub for all my craft supplies.

For the past 24 years, this magnificent armoire has served as my indispensable craft storage sanctuary. I absolutely adore its current pink exterior, a vibrant expression of my creative spirit. However, the reason I haven’t yet painted or wallpapered its interior is a somber one: the relentless march of time has taken its toll on the wood backing of the base section. It’s sadly cracking and weakening, causing the armoire to lean precariously backwards. This structural issue needs immediate attention. Soon, I will have to carefully dismantle her to replace the brittle, age-worn sections with new, sturdy wood. Once this essential repair is complete, I eagerly plan to paint the inside a joyful pink or even adorn it with decorative wallpaper. This will truly make her a feast for my eyes every single time I open her doors, transforming the interior into an extension of her charming exterior. With her vibrant new color and personalized interior, she is undeniably, and officially, a girl.

Through her remarkable 100-year history, this armoire has experienced several lives even before she became a part of mine. For me, she has served as a practical kitchen pantry, a clever clothes closet, and now, a beloved craft storage cabinet. Once her base is lovingly repaired, she will undoubtedly continue her role as a dedicated craft closet. Yet, I believe her future looks incredibly bright, with many more lives to live, purposes to fulfill, and transformations to undergo. These next chapters will likely be shaped by one or both of my daughters, who will one day inherit this extraordinary piece of family history.
