The entire incident began on Friday morning. As dawn broke, Hurricane Helene swept into our town with relentless sustained winds of 35-40 mph, punctuated by ferocious gusts reaching up to 80 mph. Her path left a trail of widespread devastation: countless trees down, power lines severed, and extensive power outages gripping communities far and wide. We were unfortunately among those directly in her path.

The scene outside was equally shocking. The sheer force of the storm ripped through our quiet neighborhood, leaving behind a landscape transformed by fallen giants. Not only did our home suffer direct impact, but our entire cul-de-sac was plunged into darkness. One of our neighbor’s colossal trees toppled across the main road leading to our street, tearing down power lines and bringing an electrical transformer crashing to the ground. This meant not just a temporary inconvenience but a complete severing of our power supply, with an uncertain timeline for restoration.

Without electricity, the simple routines we all take for granted suddenly become monumental tasks. The silence of the refrigerator, the dark evenings, and the inability to charge phones or access the internet underscored just how reliant we are on modern amenities. We anticipate being without power for several more days, as the extensive damage to the electrical infrastructure requires specialized attention from utility crews.

In the true spirit of resilience, my husband Ed and my brother-in-law have dedicated the past two days to tirelessly clearing the ground-level debris around our property. Once our immediate area is manageable, we plan to extend a helping hand to neighbors facing similar overwhelming scenarios, all while we await professional tree removal services. The sense of community during these challenging times is truly heartwarming, as everyone rallies together.

Currently, I’m writing this post from my sister’s house, a beacon of temporary normalcy where their power has fortunately just been restored. However, even they are facing new challenges, having just discovered they will lose access to water soon. We’ve already filed a claim with our insurance company and are now in the waiting game for the adjuster and tree removal service to arrive. We’ve been advised that it could take 4-5 days before they can reach us, a testament to the widespread impact of Hurricane Helene and the sheer volume of damage across the region. Patience, it seems, is our most valuable asset right now.

For the time being, all we can do is wait: wait for the insurance adjuster to assess the damage, for the tree service to clear the massive tree, and for the incredibly dedicated linemen to bring in a new pole and transformer. Our hearts go out to these hardworking individuals who are laboring around the clock, often in challenging conditions, to help communities like ours get our lives back to normal.
