2 – Pieces of 3/4” plywood: One for the base (the platform for wheels) and one for the top surface of the combined cabinets.
Bandit Wood Veneer Edge Trimmer: A handy tool for neat, professional-looking edges.
Bandit Veneer Edging: Iron-on wood veneer tape to cover raw plywood edges.
3 plain wheels with metal bases and 1 locking wheel: The locking wheel (with an On/Off lever) is crucial for stability.
16 wood screws: To securely attach the wheels to the plywood base.
Latex paint – satin finish: The base for your homemade chalk paint. Choose your desired color.
Plaster of Paris and/or Calcium Carbonate Powder: The key ingredients for creating your own chalk paint mixture.
Soft rag and/or buffing mitt: Essential for applying and buffing paste wax.
Paint brush or foam roller: For smooth and even paint application.

Apply Veneer with Heat: Heat up your standard clothes iron to a medium-high setting. Position the wood veneer tape along the edge of your plywood. Slowly and firmly press the hot iron along the tape, melting the adhesive and bonding it to the wood. Move the iron steadily to ensure even adhesion across the entire length. It’s truly that easy!
Instant Transformation: As you apply the heat, you’ll witness an immediate change – no more rough, unfinished edges! The veneer creates a seamless and polished look.
Trim Excess Veneer: If the veneer tape is slightly wider than your plywood edge, don’t worry. Simply run a sharp utility knife or, even better, a specialized edge trimmer (like the Bandit Wood Veneer Edge Trimmer) along the edge to cleanly remove any excess. This step ensures a flush and professional finish.

The Power of Mobility: How to Add Wheels To a File Cabinet Platform

Adding wheels not only makes your file cabinets easily movable but also elevates their style by providing a modern, integrated look when combined on a custom platform.

Attach Wheels to the Base Board: Begin by attaching the four caster wheels to the underside of your plywood base board using sturdy wood screws. For optimal stability and balance, position one wheel at each corner of the board. Leave approximately two inches from the edge to the center of each wheel’s base. To make this process smoother and prevent wood splitting, I highly recommend marking the screw holes and pre-drilling each one with a drill bit slightly smaller than your screws. Ensure the locking wheel is easily accessible when the unit is upright.

Position the File Cabinets: Once the wheels are securely attached, flip the base board over. Before placing the cabinets, engage the locking wheel by setting it to the “ON” position. This will prevent the base from rolling unexpectedly while you’re positioning the heavy cabinets. Carefully lift and place both file cabinets onto the prepared wheeled base, pushing them together so they are neatly butted against each other.

Due to the substantial weight of these metal file cabinets, I found them to be incredibly stable and secure on the platform without needing additional fasteners. However, if you prefer extra security, or if your cabinets are lighter, here are some options: You could remove the drawers, drill a hole through the bottom metal of the cabinet and into the wood base, then secure them with carriage-style bolts. Alternatively, working from the inside, remove the drawers, drill small pilot holes through the metal base of the cabinet, and then drive wood screws through these holes directly into the plywood platform. Add as many screws as you deem necessary for your peace of mind.

Add the Top Board: Finally, carefully place the second cut and veneered plywood board on top of the two file cabinets. This creates a unified, smooth working surface that adds both aesthetic appeal and practical utility to your new storage unit.

Unleash Color: How to Paint the Metal File Cabinet With Homemade Chalk Paint

Chalk paint is renowned for its incredible adhesion to various surfaces, including metal, without the typical need for extensive preparation. However, a little light sanding can always help ensure the best possible bond and a smoother finish.

Mix Your Homemade Chalk Paint: I prepared my homemade chalk paint in a plastic container with a secure lid, allowing for easy storage of any leftovers. For this project, I utilized the highly effective Calcium Carbonate Powder recipe, which consistently delivers excellent results and a beautifully smooth finish.

Calcium Carbonate Powder Homemade Chalk Paint Recipe:

1 quart of a high-quality interior latex satin paint (choose your desired color).
8 tablespoons of Calcium Carbonate Powder + 2 tablespoons of Plaster of Paris. (Alternatively, if you prefer to use only Plaster of Paris, simply use 10 tablespoons of Plaster of Paris.)

Mixing Instructions: In a separate small bowl, combine the Calcium Carbonate Powder (and Plaster of Paris, if using) with 1 to 3 tablespoons of warm water. Stir thoroughly until you achieve a completely smooth, lump-free paste. It’s crucial that there are no undissolved clumps. Slowly pour this smooth mixture into your latex paint, stirring continuously and vigorously. Continue mixing until the paint is uniform in consistency and you can no longer see any powder residue. A well-mixed chalk paint will ensure a smooth application and even finish.

Prepare the Surface: One of the greatest advantages of DIY or homemade chalk paint is that it typically eliminates the need for a separate primer. However, to maximize adhesion and achieve the smoothest possible finish, I always recommend a quick, light sanding. Prepare Frames for Attachment: Most mini frames come with an easel stand on the back. To ensure the frames sit flush against the drawer fronts, carefully remove these easel supports. This will create a flat surface for easy and secure attachment.
Attach Label Holders to Drawers: With the frames prepared and labels inserted, it’s time to attach them to your file cabinet drawers. Apply a small dot of hot glue to each corner on the back of the frames. Carefully center and press each frame onto the front of its respective drawer. Hold firmly for a few seconds until the glue sets. Hot glue provides a strong, instant bond, but for a potentially more permanent fixture, you could use a strong adhesive like E6000 or even tiny self-tapping screws if your frames allow.
