Step-by-Step Guide: How to Makeover a Table With Changeable Color Panels

This detailed guide will walk you through the process of transforming a simple thrift store table into a versatile, stylish piece with interchangeable color panels and elegant ball accents. Follow these steps for a successful DIY furniture makeover.

Supplies Needed:

• 4 – 1 1/2” round wood balls – readily available at craft stores like AC Moore or online.
• 4 – Dowel screws – 3/16” x 2” – typically found at hardware stores like Lowe’s.
• Drill and an appropriately sized drill bit.
• White semi-gloss paint and non-sanded grout for making DIY chalk paint – available at hardware stores.
• Johnson’s Clear Finishing Wax or Annie Sloan Clear Wax – for sealing and protecting the finish.
• Inexpensive hardboard cut to fit table top and bottom shelf recesses (if applicable for interchangeable panels).
• Assorted craft paints in your chosen colors (for interchangeable panels).
• Medium grit sandpaper and a sanding block.
• Soft cloths for waxing and buffing.

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Wood Balls: Begin by carefully drilling a hole into each of the four wood balls. It’s crucial to keep the drill bit perfectly straight as you create the hole to ensure a clean, centered result. Aim for a depth that accommodates one half of the dowel screw. Exercise caution to avoid drilling all the way through the ball – a mistake I learned from firsthand! Thankfully, wood balls often come in packs of more than four, providing a buffer for any mishaps.



2. Insert Dowel Screws: Once the holes are drilled, firmly insert one end of a dowel screw into each wood ball. Twist until it’s secure, leaving the other threaded end exposed for attachment to the table.



3. Attach Ball Embellishments to Table: Identify the top corners of your table where you wish to add the wood ball embellishments. If your table has recessed areas for inserts, ensure these are cleared. I initially painted the table before attaching the balls, then painted the balls afterward. A more efficient approach would be to attach them first, then paint everything simultaneously for a seamless finish. 4. Secure the Ball Accents: First, drill a pilot hole into each top corner of the table, making sure it aligns with the exposed end of the dowel screw in the wood ball. Next, take the wood ball with its attached screw and gently twist the exposed end into the newly drilled hole on the table corner until it is securely fastened.

Repeat this process for each of the remaining corners. Once all four wood balls are attached, you can proceed with painting the entire table, including the newly added accents, for a cohesive finish.

Since I only needed small quantities for the table and various inserts, I cut the recipe amounts in half. For each hardboard insert’s specific color, I used one bottle of craft paint mixed with the grout base.

If it’s too thick, add a tiny bit of water to achieve a brush-on texture that is easy to work with. I applied the paint relatively thickly, knowing that I would sand it smooth once dry to achieve the desired distressed effect. This thicker application also helps in building up character for distressing.

   

6. Distress and Wax for a Professional Finish: Once the paint was completely dry, I moved on to the distressing process. I gently rubbed a medium-grit sandpaper, wrapped around a sanding block, along the edges and raised areas of the table. This technique subtly reveals the underlying wood, creating that charming aged look. After distressing, I meticulously cleaned all the sanding grit from the surface using a damp rag.

Next, I applied a thin, even coat of Minwax (or your chosen clear wax) over the entire table and all the painted hardboard inserts using a soft cloth. This wax layer not only seals the paint but also enhances its durability and gives it a beautiful, soft sheen. I allowed the wax to dry overnight, then returned with a fresh, soft cloth to buff the waxed surfaces to a lovely, radiant glow. This buffing action is key to achieving that professional, smooth finish that truly brings out the character of the chalk paint.



The application of a finishing paste wax is what truly elevates the look, giving the chalk paint a professional and enduring finish. While chalk paint eliminates the need for extensive priming or sanding, it does require this waxing step. It’s a trade-off: less prep time for painting, but an extra step for sealing. From my experience, working with this type of paint was incredibly satisfying, and I’m already looking forward to my next chalk paint project!
