The past few weeks have marked an unexpected silence here on the blog, a pause in our usual flow of creative inspiration and home decor ideas. This quiet period was not by choice but rather a direct consequence of nature’s formidable power. Our serene life was dramatically interrupted when Hurricane Helene swept through, unleashing powerful winds that sent a massive tree crashing directly onto our home. The impact was profound, piercing through the roof and into the heart of the upstairs, specifically my cherished “pretty guest room.” This unforeseen event plunged us into the demanding world of hurricane damage repair and home restoration.
Given the significant disruption and the extensive work involved in recovering from such property damage, creating new content has understandably taken a back seat. However, I didn’t want to leave you in the dark. Today, I’m excited to share a comprehensive update on our house repairs and offer a glimpse into the joyful, creative preparations I’ve been immersed in for my daughter Mandy’s upcoming wedding. It’s a tale of resilience, recovery, and the enduring spirit of celebration amidst adversity.
When that enormous tree branch tore through the house, the initial shock was immense. It was a moment of disbelief, seeing the sky through what used to be our solid roof. Yet, amidst the chaos and the visceral sound of the impact, my immediate relief was knowing that no one was hurt. Property damage, while devastating, is fixable. This fundamental truth allowed me to approach the daunting task ahead with a sense of calm resolve, knowing that our home would eventually be restored.
Facing such extensive damage, it was crucial to manage my stress and maintain a positive outlook. I made a conscious effort to take the entire repair process in stride, understanding that getting our home back to normal would be a significant undertaking requiring patience and persistence. Overcoming natural disaster damage isn’t just about physical repairs; it’s also about mental fortitude. I focused on breaking down the overwhelming task into manageable steps, celebrating each small victory as we progressed towards restoring our sanctuary.
Navigating Hurricane Aftermath: Tree Removal and Initial Home Repairs
One of the first crucial steps in our post-hurricane recovery was the tree removal. We were incredibly fortunate that the tree company we’ve relied on for years prioritized their existing clients, allowing us to get on their schedule relatively quickly amidst the hundreds of other storm-damaged properties in our area. Their prompt response was a tremendous relief and set the stage for the rest of our home repair journey.
Witnessing the tree removal crew in action was truly remarkable. They utilized an impressive rig featuring a massive crane, equipped with a specialized claw and saw attachment at its end. This innovative setup allowed them to precisely grab sections of the fallen tree and saw them off with incredible control. The crane, strategically positioned in front of our house, was operated by a skilled professional on the ground using a remote control board and a headset. He was in constant communication with another crew member stationed on the roof, who expertly guided him on where to maneuver the claw and saw next, ensuring a safe and efficient removal of the colossal debris from our home.
Once the fallen tree was safely removed, our focus shifted to the critical roof repairs. A week ago, the roofing specialists arrived, ready to restore the integrity of our home’s protective shell. However, before new materials could be installed, the old, damaged shingles had to be stripped away. This essential preliminary step, while messy, was fascinating to observe. Shingles and debris cascaded down, creating a significant but temporary mess around all sides of the house. It was a clear reminder of the extensive damage sustained and the thorough process required for a complete roof restoration.
Beyond the surface layer of shingles, the crew also identified and replaced several sections of the roof with new, sturdy boards. This particular area, now gleaming with fresh wood and daylight streaming in, is actually our attic – the very space where I meticulously store my decor stash when it’s not in use. Seeing the inside of the attic so exposed and bathed in natural light was a surreal experience. You might be wondering about my collection of treasured decor items, carefully arranged on shelves so close to all the action. Miraculously, despite all the pounding, hammering, and nail-gunning, not a single item was broken. It was a small, yet significant, comfort amidst the larger challenges.
The home restoration efforts were a concerted operation, involving multiple specialized teams working in tandem. While one crew meticulously addressed the damaged area of the roof and proceeded to replace the entire roof of the house for structural integrity and uniformity, another dedicated team worked simultaneously on repairing the exterior side of the house. This coordinated approach helped expedite the recovery process, addressing both critical structural damage and aesthetic elements to bring our home back to its pre-hurricane condition, or even better.
The exterior work is nearing completion, and I’m thrilled to report that another protective coat of paint will be applied today, bringing a fresh, unified look to the siding. Simultaneously, a new gutter system will be installed, essential for diverting rainwater and preventing future water damage. These final touches on the exterior signify significant progress, and it’s incredibly satisfying to see the house beginning to look whole again. The precision and dedication of these various repair teams have been truly impressive.
Inside the house, equally vital structural repairs have been diligently carried out. Just yesterday, the critical work on the broken ceiling beam in the guest room was successfully completed. This was a major structural undertaking, and I’m so relieved it’s done. Now, my fingers are crossed that when the new ceiling is installed and the elegant crown molding is added, it will seamlessly meet, or even slightly overlap, the beautiful wallpaper I recently added to the room. If not, I’ll face the unfortunate task of removing it, which would be a bittersweet moment given how much I love the design. 🙁 Such are the unpredictable challenges of home renovation, especially after an unexpected disaster.
The journey to full interior restoration continues, but with a brief, joyful interlude. After my daughter’s highly anticipated wedding, the guest room ceiling will finally receive its sheetrock and a fresh coat of paint, sealing off the exposed areas and bringing back its pristine appearance. Following this, the same dedicated contractor will turn his attention to the kitchen ceiling, which, regrettably, sustained some water damage during the hurricane. It’s a phased approach, balancing immediate structural needs with cosmetic finishes, ensuring every corner of our home is meticulously cared for and restored to its former glory. This comprehensive home repair strategy gives us peace of mind.
From Home Restoration to Wedding Bliss: Full Wedding Prep Mode
On a much brighter and personal note, my heart is overflowing with excitement as we draw closer to the wedding of my beloved daughter Mandy and her wonderful fiancé, Matt. They are truly perfect for each other, complementing each other in every way, and my husband Ed and I could not be happier or prouder to welcome Matt into our family. This celebration serves as a beautiful counterpoint to the recent challenges, a reminder of life’s precious moments and the joy of new beginnings. Immersing myself in these wedding preparations has been a wonderful distraction and a source of immense creative energy.
A significant part of my wedding prep has involved crafting unique DIY wedding decor, which always brings me immense joy. One of these projects involved giving this spectacular DIY Tiered Donut Stand a fresh, new color. This stand holds a special place in my heart, as I originally made it for my older daughter Kelly’s rustic barn wedding back in 2018 (you can see that post for more details!). It’s wonderful to give a cherished piece a second life and adapt it to Mandy’s unique vision.
Like Kelly’s nuptials, Mandy and Matt’s wedding will also take place in scenic Virginia. However, instead of the charming backdrop of a horse farm, their celebration will be a unique weekend-long affair at a beautiful summer camp. This camp offers a truly distinctive experience, as it rents out the entire facility during the off-season for weddings and other special events. Guests have the charming option to stay and sleep in cozy cabins for the entire weekend, a delightful experience that Ed and I, along with many others, will certainly be embracing. This unique wedding venue promises an unforgettable celebration for everyone involved.
When I lovingly unearthed the tiered donut stand from storage, it was clear that it was due for a refresh. While its original white finish was lovely, Mandy had a specific vision for her wedding aesthetic. Armed with my extensive collection of spray paints, we began the fun process of testing out various colors. After careful consideration and several swatches, Mandy decisively chose a radiant gold, a color that perfectly aligns with her wedding theme and adds a touch of modern elegance to this beloved piece. This simple DIY project highlights how minor changes can dramatically transform decor.
One coat of shimmering gold paint is already down, and just one more to go to achieve that perfect, lustrous finish. For Mandy’s special day, this beautifully revitalized stand will proudly display an array of delicious cookies, rather than donuts, catering to their specific dessert preferences. It’s a small detail that makes their celebration uniquely theirs. Once the stand is completely finished, I have a few more delightful crafty items to create, all part of the personalized touches for their wedding. Soon after, everything will be carefully packed up and transported to Virginia, ready for the grand festivities. Proactive Safety: Addressing Future Tree Risks on Our Property
Beyond being situated on a beautiful lake, one of the cherished aspects of our home’s location is the abundance of magnificent trees throughout our neighborhood. As you can clearly see in the surrounding landscape, our property itself is adorned with many such trees, most of which are exceptionally tall pines. While they offer incredible beauty, shade, and a sense of natural grandeur, the recent hurricane has underscored the significant risks they can pose. With this in mind, we’ve made the difficult but necessary decision to have three more of these towering trees removed, including the tree furthest to the right in the photograph above.
This isn’t our first experience with tree removal. Over the years, we’ve proactively taken down two other large pines and several smaller ones. One of the large trees was unfortunately struck by lightning quite a few years ago. Although it didn’t immediately fall or cause any damage, the lightning strike tragically killed it and a smaller companion tree nearby. Recognizing the potential hazard of dead trees, we promptly arranged for their removal. Another substantial pine that we had taken down was located on the serene lakeside of our house, right along the shoreline, posing a risk to both our property and the water access.
These past experiences, combined with the recent harrowing event of a tree crashing through our roof during Hurricane Helene, have solidified our decision. We are now moving forward with the plan to remove three more of the pines closest to our home. This includes the biggest one situated prominently in the front yard (as shown in the image above), another on the side yard, and a third on the lake side of the property. It’s a bittersweet choice. We will undoubtedly miss the cooling shade and the natural beauty these trees provide, and it saddens me deeply to have to remove a living tree. However, this is a crucial step for the long-term safety and security of our home and family. We simply cannot risk another such devastating incident.
Future Aspirations: Our Kitchen Renovation Plans and Financial Realities
While we are making significant progress on the hurricane repairs, the need to remove additional trees adds another substantial financial burden. This means our carefully planned budget for future home improvements, particularly the much-anticipated kitchen updates, is going to take a considerable hit. It’s a frustrating but understandable reality that the kitchen renovation may have to wait once again. We had envisioned modernizing the space, enhancing its functionality, and giving it a fresh aesthetic, but these aspirations are currently on hold.

Our next steps will largely depend on understanding precisely what our insurance will cover and what will remain out-of-pocket expenses for the hurricane and tree removal projects. Only once we’ve reconciled all the bills and have a clear financial picture can we realistically decide on the timeline and scope for our kitchen renovation. In moments like these, winning the lottery feels like a perfectly reasonable dream! 🙂
