• Landscape fabric and pins (for weed control and sub-base stability)
• Shovel, rake, and broom (for excavation, leveling, and sand distribution)
• Garden hose connected to a water source (for settling the sand)
• Plate compactor (optional, but highly recommended for a firm base)
• Level (for ensuring an even surface)

Detailed Installation Process for a Wider Walkway:

1. Outline and Excavate: Determine the desired length and width of your walkway or patio. Use stakes and string or marking paint to clearly define the perimeter. Begin removing dirt to a depth that will allow your pavers (plus a sand bed and landscape fabric) to sit level with or slightly above the surrounding ground. Account for the thickness of your pavers and a 1-2 inch sand bed.
2. Prepare the Sub-Base: Once excavated, compact the exposed dirt to create a firm, stable sub-base. A plate compactor makes this much easier and more effective, preventing future settling. Ensure the area is properly graded to allow for adequate drainage, with a slight slope away from any structures.
3. Install Weed Barrier: Lay down a layer of heavy-duty landscape fabric over the compacted sub-base. This acts as a weed barrier and helps stabilize the sand layer. Secure the fabric with landscape pins.
4. Create a Sand Bed: Spread a uniform layer of play sand, typically 1-2 inches thick, over the landscape fabric. Use a screed board (a straight piece of lumber) to level the sand bed precisely. This is crucial for the final evenness of your walkway. Lightly compact the sand.
5. Design Your Pattern: Before you start laying, draw your brick and slate paver layout pattern on paper. This helps visualize the arrangement and minimizes adjustments during installation.
6. Lay Pavers with Precision: Starting from a stable edge (like a house foundation or a fixed border), begin laying your bricks and slate pavers according to your design. Leave a consistent gap of about 1/2 inch between each paver. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap each paver into the sand bed, ensuring it is level with its neighbors and the overall plane of the walkway. Use a level frequently.
7. Fill the Joints: Once all bricks and slate pavers are securely in place, pour dry play sand over the entire surface of the walkway. Use a broom to sweep the sand into all the spaces and joints between the pavers. Ensure every gap is thoroughly filled.
8. Settle the Sand: Using a garden hose set to a gentle sprinkle or mist setting, thoroughly wet the entire area. This helps the sand settle deeply into the paver joints. Avoid high-pressure sprays, which can wash sand out.
9. Final Touches and Maintenance: After a few days, repeat the joint-filling step by sweeping more sand into any areas where it has settled. Lightly spray with water again. This ensures a densely packed, stable walkway. Ongoing maintenance involves occasionally sweeping more sand into joints as needed.
