It’s not about extensive overhauls, but rather thoughtful adjustments to decorative accessories. My coffee table, often a blank canvas right at the heart of the room, is usually my first target for these seasonal tweaks. It’s where I love to experiment with colors and textures that reflect the changing moods of nature.
This year, as I envisioned my ideal spring coffee table arrangement, I hit a snag. Despite visiting all my favorite home decor stores, nothing seemed quite right. Everything I encountered felt either overly trendy or simply didn’t align with my personal decorating aesthetic. I was searching for something specific – a touch of elegance, a hint of freshness, and a pop of color that would truly sing spring.
The breakthrough came unexpectedly while leafing through a catalog that arrived in the mail. My eyes landed on an image that instantly sparked inspiration. Not the front door itself, of course, but the exquisite color of that door! It was the exact shade of pink I had been subconsciously searching for – a soft, inviting hue that felt perfectly “spring.” I knew then and there that this color was precisely what I needed to incorporate into my living room’s accessory scheme, particularly for styling my coffee table. The adorable door wreath in the image was also quite charming, adding to the overall appeal.
As I continued flipping through the catalog, another image caught my attention, solidifying my vision even further.
There it was – a beautifully styled table featuring a pink tray! It instantly reminded me of a similar round metal table I had previously DIYed for my living room. The pink tray in the catalog, called “The Celebration Tray,” had the perfect color. However, it also featured a “Cheers!” design painted on it. While delightful for a party, this wasn’t something I wanted to see as a permanent fixture on my coffee table every day. My goal was a clean, solid burst of that beautiful pink.
So, you can probably guess what my next step was, right? It was time to get creative and make my own version!
My mission became clear: find a large, square wooden tray that I could paint in that perfect shade of pink. Luckily, I stumbled upon an ideal candidate for just $12.88! You can see its “BEFORE” state in the photo above – a perfectly nice, natural wood tray. While it certainly had its own charm, I had a distinct vision for it, and I was eager to bring it to life. This project was a delightful semi-DIY endeavor, tailored perfectly to fit my personal style and spring aesthetic.

How to Paint a Large Tray to Style a Coffee Table
Transforming a simple wood tray into a stylish centerpiece is an incredibly satisfying and straightforward project. Here’s everything you’ll need and a step-by-step guide to achieve that perfect look.
Supplies Needed:
- BHG Wood Tray (approximately $12.88)
- Craft Paint – I used Apple Barrel Fuchsia #20216E, a vibrant and lovely pink
- 100-grit sandpaper (for preparing the surface)
- Quality paint brush
- Soft Wax (such as Annie Sloan Clear Wax or Johnson’s Clear Paste Wax)
- Shop cloth or soft, lint-free paper towel (for waxing and buffing)
- Prepare the Surface: Begin by lightly sanding the entire surface of your wood tray with 100-grit sandpaper. This isn’t about removing existing finish entirely, but rather creating a slightly scratched, textured surface. This “tooth” provides something for the paint to adhere to, ensuring a smoother, longer-lasting finish and preventing chipping. After sanding, wipe away any dust with a clean, damp cloth and allow it to dry completely.
2. Apply Paint in Thin Coats: For this project, I opted not to use a primer, as the craft paint I chose already had acrylic properties that provide good adhesion. However, if your tray has a particularly slick finish or you’re using a lighter color over a dark base, a thin coat of primer can be beneficial. If you do use primer, allow it to dry thoroughly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
When applying your chosen craft paint, remember that thin coats are key to a professional-looking finish. I brushed on three very light coats, allowing each coat to dry for approximately 6 hours before applying the next. This patience prevents drips, ensures even coverage, and builds a robust color. Rushing this step can lead to a sticky finish or uneven brush strokes. If you notice any slight imperfections between coats, a very fine-grit sandpaper (220-grit or higher) can be used lightly before the next application.
3. Seal with Wax and Buff to Shine: Once the final coat of paint was completely dry – I recommend waiting at least 24 hours to ensure full curing – it was time to seal and protect the surface. I applied a thin, even coat of Annie Sloan clear wax over the painted surface. Wax not only provides a protective barrier against wear and tear but also enhances the depth and vibrancy of the color.
How Do You Buff Wax on Painted Furniture or Surfaces?
After applying a thin layer of wax to your painted surface, the crucial next step is buffing it with a soft, lint-free cloth or a shop towel. When you first start buffing, the cloth or paper towel might feel like it’s dragging or catching on the surface. This is completely normal! The key is to continue working the wax into the surface and applying gentle but firm pressure. As you go over the wax repeatedly, it will begin to smooth out, and the cloth will eventually glide much more easily.
You’ll know you’ve buffed the surface enough when the cloth moves freely and effortlessly over the waxed area. Simultaneously, you will start to notice a subtle, elegant sheen appearing on the surface, indicating that the wax has been properly worked in and the excess has been buffed away. If you desire a more durable or protective finish, you can apply another thin layer of wax over the freshly buffed surface and repeat the entire process. This layering creates a stronger, more resilient barrier.
While I often use Annie Sloan wax, any quality soft wax will work. Johnson’s Clear Paste Wax is an excellent, more budget-friendly option and performs very well. My only minor critique of Johnson’s wax is its noticeable odor during application and while it dries. However, once it’s completely dry and cured, the smell dissipates entirely, leaving behind a beautifully protected and subtly gleaming surface.
Spring Coffee Table Styling Tray – AFTER
The transformation was instant and delightful! After the final buffing, I carefully placed my newly painted pink tray onto my coffee table. The moment it settled, it was as if spring itself blossomed right there in my living room. The vibrant pop of color immediately lifted the entire ambiance, creating a focal point that felt both fresh and inviting.
Now, every time I walk into the room, that cheerful splash of pink brings a smile to my face. It’s amazing how such a simple DIY project can have such a profound impact on the mood and aesthetic of a space.
