My recent Labor Day weekend escape with Ed, visiting our eldest daughter in the vibrant Albany area, was a testament to this allure. We were blessed with glorious weather, creating the perfect backdrop for soaking in the last golden moments of the summer vacation season.

Embracing the ‘Queen of American Lakes’

Our Saturday adventure led us straight to the unparalleled beauty of Lake George. If you’ve yet to experience it, prepare to be captivated by this glittering jewel nestled at the southeastern base of the majestic Adirondack Mountains. Known affectionately as the “Queen of American Lakes,” Lake George offers an exquisite blend of natural splendor and quaint, old-world charm. Its western shores are dotted with a delightful array of scenic water views, historic inns, cozy cottages, family-friendly motels, charming boutiques, and inviting restaurants, creating a perfect vacation haven.

While the main town of Lake George can be bustling, especially during peak holiday weekends, we opted for a slightly more serene experience. We headed a bit further north along scenic Lake Shore Drive to Bolton Landing. This charming village offers a more relaxed atmosphere while still providing excellent access to the lake’s many attractions, proving to be an ideal starting point for our day of exploration.

Kayaking Paradise on Lake George

Our primary goal for the day was to immerse ourselves in the lake’s tranquil waters by kayak. We found the perfect spot at the Lake George Kayak Company, conveniently located on Green Island in Bolton Landing. This establishment provides everything you need for a fantastic paddling experience, making it easy for both novices and seasoned kayakers to get out on the water. The process was smooth, and soon enough, my daughter, her boyfriend, Ed, and I were equipped and ready to embark on our aquatic journey.

We spent a glorious four hours gracefully gliding across the surface of the lake, absorbing every breathtaking view. Kayaking offers a unique perspective, allowing you to discover hidden coves, observe the shoreline’s intricate details, and feel a true connection with nature. We particularly enjoyed paddling around Green Island, which afforded us a magnificent, unobstructed vista of the iconic Sagamore Hotel Resort from the water. It’s quite remarkable to discover that this magnificent structure has burned down not once, but several times throughout its existence, only to be rebuilt with even greater grandeur each time. Today, it thrives as a beacon of luxury and history on the lake, a popular destination for visitors seeking an elegant retreat.

As we paddled, we encountered various elements of Lake George’s vibrant life. We leisurely cruised past bustling ferries, observing them as they traversed the lake, connecting different points and offering scenic tours. We also admired charming waterfront Bed and Breakfasts, some complete with classic boathouses tucked neatly beneath, adding to the picturesque charm of the shoreline. Each paddle stroke brought a new visual delight, from the clarity of the water to the lush greenery of the surrounding Adirondack forests.

As the sun began its descent, casting a warm glow over the lake, we reluctantly returned our kayaks. Our appetites whetted by our paddling exertions, we then headed to the Tavern on the Lake for a delightful lakeside dining experience. This charming restaurant is housed in a very old, character-filled stone building, situated right at the water’s edge in Bolton Landing. The ambiance is rustic yet elegant, perfectly complementing the natural beauty outside.

Dining on the restaurant’s terrace, with the gentle lapping of the waves as our soundtrack, was truly a highlight. I could easily envision how even more spectacular this view would become in just a few short weeks, as the surrounding trees burst into their full autumn splendor, painting the landscape in a breathtaking palette of reds, oranges, and golds. It’s a quintessential Lake George experience, offering delicious food paired with an unbeatable vista.

Beyond the Lake: Adventures in Upstate NY

Our Upstate New York adventure wasn’t limited to Lake George alone. Sunday provided a welcome change of pace, allowing us to relax and enjoy a leisurely walk along a peaceful wooded trail near our accommodations in the Albany area. These quieter moments, surrounded by nature, offered a perfect balance to the active lakeside day, showcasing the diverse appeal of the region.

Hiking at Thacher State Park

On Monday, we packed a delicious picnic lunch and ventured out for a invigorating hike at John Boyd Thacher State Park, located approximately 15 miles southwest of Albany. This hidden gem is renowned for its magnificent limestone cliffs, dramatic waterfalls, and unparalleled panoramic views of the Hudson-Mohawk valleys and the distant Adirondack and Catskill Mountains. We chose to explore the popular Indian Ladder Trail, a truly unique path that takes you behind two waterfalls and along the base of the cliffs, offering incredible geological formations and fossil discoveries.

While the park typically boasts stunning waterfalls in the spring, the summer had been quite dry during our visit, so we primarily saw impressive rock formations where water would usually cascade. Even without the waterfalls, the sheer scale of the rock walls and the natural beauty of the trail were awe-inspiring. It provided a fantastic opportunity for some playful photos, with one of our group humorously pretending to hold up the massive rock face, adding a touch of lighthearted fun to our adventure.

A Sweet Farewell to a Perfect Weekend

Just like our Lake George excursion, the day at Thacher State Park seemed to conclude far too quickly. As we began our journey home, we made one essential stop that no Upstate New York road trip is complete without: Martha’s Dandee Creme. This iconic ice cream stand is a beloved local institution, famous for serving up the most generously sized and utterly delicious soft-serve ice cream cones you can imagine. What they call a “small” here would easily pass for a “large” almost anywhere else!

Indulging in these epic treats was the perfect sweet ending to a fun-filled Labor Day weekend. Our first experience with a “small” cone was delightful, but we’re already plotting our next visit to courageously tackle a “large” – a challenge we eagerly anticipate! It’s moments like these, enjoying simple pleasures and local flavors, that truly round out a memorable travel experience.
