In the quest for a kitchen that truly works for you, how do you strike the perfect balance between practical functionality for daily cooking and food preparation, while still embracing beautiful decorative elements – especially when grappling with limited counter space?
My journey into a whole food plant-based diet, aimed at enriching my health, became a catalyst for a complete re-evaluation of my kitchen setup. Suddenly, getting impeccably organized, cultivating the right mindset around cooking, and equipping myself with the most suitable tools became paramount. This shift dramatically influenced how I approached my kitchen, particularly optimizing my often-cramped countertop areas.
Without making these aspects a top priority, I quickly realized my cooking endeavors would become overly time-consuming. This inefficiency could easily lead to discouragement, making it difficult to sustain a plant-based lifestyle long-term. Success, for me, hinged on transforming my approach to kitchen countertop organization, making every food prep and cooking task as streamlined and efficient as possible.

From Decor Enthusiast to Efficient Home Chef: A Kitchen Transformation
In my earlier life, I considered myself a “non-cook.” My kitchen focus was almost exclusively on aesthetics – how could I make my countertops look pretty? The functional aspect was secondary, as I rarely cooked. My primary concern was showcasing my latest HomeGoods find, arranging decorative pieces on my kitchen counters, rather than strategically “setting up” the space for ultra-efficient daily meal preparation.

However, the transition to a whole food, plant-based diet, where I now prepare most of my meals from scratch, necessitated a complete overhaul. My kitchen had to evolve into a highly functioning culinary hub. While many plant-based chefs I observe online prioritize 100% functionality with little regard for decor, I found myself needing both. My brain thrives on seeing beauty alongside the high-performance aspects of every room in my home.

For quite some time, I’ve been mentally strategizing a kitchen counter organization plan to create a space that is not only highly efficient for my current cooking style but also decoratively appealing. This dual objective is a dance of “give and take,” especially in my small kitchen. Balancing function with aesthetics, and maintaining a clutter-free environment, is key to my personal cooking and decorating philosophy. While I still dream of a custom-designed, much larger kitchen extension, for now, I focus on optimizing the space I have.
Maximizing Efficiency in a Small Kitchen: Strategic Additions and Appliance Choices
One of the first practical steps I took to enhance my small kitchen’s functionality on my whole food, plant-based journey was to integrate a large cutting board onto my metal cart on wheels, which I use as a kitchen island. This simple addition proved to be an invaluable success, dramatically expanding my usable prep surface and becoming a constantly utilized feature in our home.

In a previous article, I highlighted the essential tools I rely on daily for preparing plant-based meals. Among them, my Vitamix stands out – an incredible high-speed blender that lives on my countertop and sees daily action. However, I discovered its limitations when processing combinations of non-liquid foods. For instance, when attempting recipes like Chickpea Deli Salad or No-Crab Mini Crab Cakes, I found myself repeatedly stopping the machine to push food back towards the blades, a frustrating and inefficient process.
The Essential Addition: A Food Processor for Seamless Prep
It became clear that a food processor was a missing piece in my kitchen arsenal. Yet, I hesitated, facing several common dilemmas for small kitchen owners:
- Space Constraint: Where would such an appliance fit on my already limited kitchen counter space?
- Capacity vs. Efficiency: A small food processor wouldn’t handle the larger “batch” quantities of food I often prepare, negating any real help.
- Storage Dilemma: A larger model would inevitably mean storing it in a cabinet, requiring me to lug it out for every use. This lack of easy accessibility contradicts the very definition of efficiency I was aiming for.
I even explored the new food processor attachment for the Vitamix, but its sheer size, cost, and complex assembly meant it would also need cabinet storage – far from the simple, accessible solution I desired. My philosophy is simple: if an appliance requires too much effort to retrieve and set up, it will likely go unused. Efficiency thrives on ease of access.
My friend Gail’s new home offered a glimpse of an ideal solution: a large, open kitchen featuring a deep, double-door walk-in pantry. Inside, a wrap-around counter with a backsplash and electrical outlets provides a discreet yet highly functional “appliance garage.” This setup allows for easy use of countertop appliances while keeping them neatly hidden, ensuring a perpetually clutter-free main kitchen counter. It’s a brilliant design, and I wish I had a photo to share!

Overcoming Obstacles: Finding the Perfect Food Processor for a Small Kitchen
Given my kitchen’s layout, my only realistic option for keeping frequently used appliances truly accessible was to have them permanently on the counter. A further challenge presented itself: the limited clearance between my countertops and the bottom of my wall cabinets, a mere 15 inches. This meant every appliance or decorative item had to be short enough to fit comfortably underneath, from the coffee maker to any new additions. The Vitamix, being taller than 15 inches, found its designated spot right next to the sink, the only area with sufficient vertical clearance.

When I finally committed to finding a food processor that would genuinely simplify my food prep, I embarked on extensive research. My efforts led me to the Cuisinart Pro Custom 11. This appliance proved to be the ideal compromise. It’s robust and powerful, yet remarkably simple in both operation and design. Its wide 11-cup mixing bowl offers ample capacity for batch processing, while its thoughtful, compact design allows it to fit neatly under my cabinets. The absolute best feature is its flat top, eliminating the need for the bulkier, more complex chute top when I simply need to blend ingredients for plant-based burgers or other mixed dishes. Having used it for only a week, I’m already thoroughly impressed with its performance and ease of cleaning.
To maintain a cohesive aesthetic, I chose the silver and black model, which perfectly complements my Vitamix. These two essential appliances now stand proudly as countertop companions, symbolizing the successful integration of powerful tools into a limited space.
A Tip on How to Style Limited Space on Kitchen Countertops for Beauty and Function
Once the functional foundation was laid, the next step was to infuse “the pretty” into my limited kitchen counter space. I discovered that corners, being less frequently accessed for active prep work, were the perfect spots for decorative touches. These are the zones where I’ve focused on adding elements that contribute to my kitchen’s aesthetic appeal and, in turn, my personal happiness.

In one corner of my L-shaped peninsula, I’ve crafted a cozy vignette featuring a small lamp and a candle. The warm glow of the lamp at night adds an inviting ambiance that I truly adore. For a piece that marries both beauty and practicality, I’ve opted to store our cooking utensils in an elegant caddy during the summer months. This keeps them within easy reach while adding a decorative touch, though they might return to the utensil drawer come fall.

Moving to the opposite corner, I replaced an older green desktop organizer with a sleek new wood organizer. This area serves as a designated spot for incoming paperwork, keeping it contained and tidy. My 12-cup coffee maker, a silver model I painstakingly sourced a few years ago to fit within the 15-inch height restriction, also resides here. Finding a stylish, compact coffee maker that met my height requirement was a challenge, but well worth the effort.

Adjacent to this corner is what I affectionately call my “no-prep” area. Here, I store cookbooks, outgoing mail, keys, and smaller items like sunglasses, neatly tucked away in a basket. It’s also the perfect spot to display fresh flowers, adding a touch of natural beauty to the space.

Recently, I discovered this low glass vase from the Studio McGee Collection at Target, which beautifully holds the last of my hydrangeas from the yard. Its low profile ensures it fits perfectly under the wall cabinets, making it an ideal permanent fixture for showcasing fresh blooms, a detail that always brings joy to my kitchen.

On the countertop adjacent to the cooktop, I enjoy a more generous 20 inches of clearance between the counter and the bottom of the wall cabinets. Over the years, I’ve utilized various tiered stands in one corner to organize and display fresh fruits and vegetables. More recently, I’ve added a decorative wood bowl, further enhancing the natural aesthetic. Vertical storage solutions like these are invaluable in maximizing counter space, keeping produce accessible yet contained.

Among my collection of tiered stands, this particular one is the largest and remains my absolute favorite, offering substantial storage without overwhelming the space. The opposite corner of this counter, however, is deliberately kept clear. This strategic decision ensures I always have an uncluttered landing zone for hot items coming directly from the oven, as well as a convenient spot for the toaster when it’s in use. To add a touch of personal style, I’ve hung framed art on the tiles using easily removable Command Picture Hanging Strips, a perfect solution for renters or those who like to frequently change their decor without damaging surfaces.

The Art of Balance: Achieving a Functional and Beautiful Kitchen
My kitchen now functions far more effectively for its size, making daily cooking a genuinely pleasant experience. What truly amplifies my satisfaction is knowing that I didn’t have to sacrifice decorative appeal as functional items became more prominent. Style, after all, profoundly matters!
If you’re striving for healthier eating habits and recognize the need to simplify meal prep and cooking, remember that you can absolutely achieve both beauty and efficiency. The key lies in first identifying precisely what you need to optimize your workflow. Once those essential, functional elements are in place, thoughtfully integrate decorative touches into the less-used areas of your countertops. These carefully curated arrangements, for me, bring immense joy every time I step into the room. For many, including myself, finding that perfect balance between aesthetics and function is a goal well worth pursuing in kitchen design.
I’m still nurturing dreams for my ideal kitchen layout and look forward to sharing those aspirational plans with you in the near future.
Want to Find Out More About The Way I Eat? Discover Plant-Based Living

My journey to healthier eating fundamentally began in 2019 when I first picked up a copy of the quarterly magazine, Forks Over Knives. Reading that issue, along with exploring their website and documentary on Netflix, provided invaluable guidance. It demystified what to eat and, crucially, how to prepare delicious and healthy whole foods. I recently learned the profound meaning behind the name: “Forks Over Knives” encourages eating healthy foods to keep the surgeon’s scalpel at bay – a far more insightful meaning than my initial thought that it simply meant no longer needing a knife for meat!
The Summer 2021 issue of the magazine is currently available in stores, featuring two distinct covers – either a tantalizing sandwich or a grilled tostada. Regardless of the cover, the interior content is consistently rich: 100 pages packed with expert tips, stunning photography, inspiring success stories, and 72 delightfully healthy summer recipes. If you’re contemplating incorporating more plant-based foods into your diet, this issue offers abundant inspiration and practical advice.
You can find the Forks Over Knives magazine on newsstands across the U.S. and Canada, including major U.S. retailers like Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons, Safeway, Publix, Target, and Barnes & Noble. Alternatively, you can easily secure your copy directly from the Forks Over Knives website. Dive in and explore the transformative power of whole-food, plant-based eating.
Next week, I’m excited to share another delicious WFPB recipe that I can now prepare in half the time, thanks to the efficiency of my new food processor. Stay tuned!
