An Unforgettable Escape to Riviera Maya: Celebrating Milestones at El Dorado Royale
Life often presents us with unexpected gifts, and sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that surprise us most. Just four days before our departure, my husband Ed surprised me with a phenomenal trip to the captivating Riviera Maya, nestled on Mexico’s stunning Yucatan Peninsula. This wasn’t just any vacation; it was a much-needed retreat and a poignant celebration of our journey together.

For the past five years, a shadow of uncertainty had loomed over us, largely due to ongoing unemployment challenges. This created a sense of limbo in our lives, making a true escape feel not just desirable, but essential for our spirits. We seized this incredible opportunity not only to relax and rejuvenate but also to commemorate a significant milestone: our 30th wedding anniversary. While our actual anniversary falls on December 3rd, our busy schedule in November and December prompted us to celebrate a little early, and what a perfect decision that turned out to be!
Our luxurious getaway might seem like an extravagant splurge, but it was actually a testament to smart planning. As members of RCI, a reputable timeshare exchange program, we leveraged our membership to trade a week for an exquisite experience at an all-inclusive resort: The El Dorado Royale. This allowed us to indulge in unparalleled luxury without the typical price tag, proving that dream vacations are often within reach with a bit of strategic planning.
Luxurious Living in El Dorado Royale’s Casitas

Our stay at the El Dorado Royale was nothing short of magical, particularly our accommodation in the exclusive casitas section of the resort. These individual, intimate suites offered a private haven, providing us with our own little slice of paradise for the entire week. The concept of “gourmet all-inclusive” truly sets El Dorado Royale apart. For an entire week, I reveled in the luxury of not having to cook, prepare, or even think about a single meal. Every culinary desire was expertly catered to, allowing for complete relaxation.

The casitas themselves are designed with privacy and comfort in mind. Each unit felt like a secluded oasis, surrounded by lush tropical landscaping. It was a joy to wake up each morning and step out into our own serene space. While our casita was wonderful, we couldn’t help but admire the next level of luxury: casitas featuring their very own swim-up pools. This “pretty cool” amenity has already cemented our plans for our next visit; we’re definitely aiming for one of those private pool experiences!

For those seeking the ultimate indulgence, the resort also boasts end units with private beach decks and even a personal chef included – a dream for anyone wanting an unparalleled, tailor-made vacation experience. It’s clear that El Dorado Royale has truly mastered the art of luxury hospitality.

While my iPhone couldn’t capture the full splendor of our casita’s interior, I did manage to snap some fantastic photos of the totally private outdoor shower. This was, without a doubt, one of my favorite features! Each casita also included a large and spacious tumbled granite shower indoors, but there was something uniquely refreshing about showering under the open sky, surrounded by tropical foliage. The spidery-looking fixture in the bottom left of the photo is the cleverly designed shower head, blending seamlessly with the natural aesthetic.
Endless Refreshments and Beachside Bliss

Hydration and relaxation were paramount at El Dorado Royale. Every section of the casitas boasted its own dedicated pool, complete with an inviting swim-up bar. This meant a refreshing drink was never more than a few strokes away! The in-pool bar stools made for a truly immersive experience, allowing us to cool off and socialize without ever leaving the water. We certainly never found ourselves thirsty throughout our stay.

And if the pool wasn’t calling, the pristine beach was just a few steps away. The service extended seamlessly from the poolside to the sandy shores. Dedicated beach bartenders diligently ensured our glasses were continuously refilled while we lounged by the ocean. As if that weren’t enough, they also brought out an array of gourmet goodies, perfect for a light snack while soaking in the coastal ambiance. This level of attentive service truly elevated the beach experience.

The beachfront itself was dotted with inviting beach beds, offering a perfect spot for lounging. While our trip experienced some less than ideal weather, meaning I didn’t need to seek refuge from scorching sun, I could easily envision these shaded beds being an absolute godsend on hot, sunny days. They provide a serene escape to enjoy the beach breeze while comfortably out of direct sunlight.
Exploring the Expansive Grounds of El Dorado Royale

Connecting all the wonderful elements of the resort was a beautifully maintained walking path that stretched along the entire beachfront. This path was a delight to stroll along, especially in the evenings when the air was cooler and the ambiance was romantic. It provided a seamless connection between our casita, the various dining establishments, and other resort amenities.

Given the sprawling nature of El Dorado Royale, getting around is made easy and enjoyable. Golf carts are readily available to transport guests wherever they wish to go, ensuring comfort and convenience. For those who prefer a more active mode of transport, bicycles are also provided for all guests. Ed and I decided to take advantage of these and embark on a cycling tour of the resort. However, my adventure took an unexpected turn when I flipped over the handlebars, resulting in some banged-up knees and elbows. Thankfully, the resort’s quick response team, arriving swiftly in a golf cart ambulance, administered antiseptic and gauze pads, ensuring I was quickly patched up. Despite the minor mishap, it only added a memorable (and slightly humorous) anecdote to our trip.

Following my brief cycling incident, Ed and I opted for a more leisurely pace, choosing to walk everywhere. This allowed us to enjoy the beautiful scenery, get some much-needed exercise, and counteract the effects of the delightful gourmet food and drinks we were enjoying all day long. It was a wonderful way to truly absorb the serene beauty of the resort grounds.

As a designated spa resort, El Dorado Royale offers numerous opportunities for ultimate relaxation. Quaint massage huts are strategically placed along the beachfront, providing a soothing ambiance for a therapeutic massage. After my little tumble from the bike, my muscles were understandably quite tense from the unexpected fall. I decided to indulge in this perk, and the massage proved to be incredibly helpful, easing the tension and adding to the overall feeling of pampered bliss.

A Culinary Journey and Romantic Dinners
The beachfront path also led us to the resort’s impressive array of restaurants, where we embarked on a week-long gourmet adventure. Breakfasts were served buffet style, offering a vast selection of delectable options to start our day. However, lunch and dinner were truly exceptional, consisting of elegant, sit-down five-course meals. The portions were perfectly sized – not overwhelming, but just right, reflecting a sophisticated, very European dining philosophy. Each dish was a work of art, prepared with fresh, high-quality ingredients and presented beautifully.

One of the highlights of our dining experience was the opportunity to eat outside, with the soothing sound of the ocean as our backdrop. The gentle sea breeze and the panoramic views transformed every meal into a memorable occasion. The resort truly knows how to create an enchanting atmosphere.

On our final night, the resort arranged a truly special surprise for us: a magical candlelight dinner right on the beach. It was an incredibly dreamy setting, made even more perfect by the presence of a full moon casting its luminous glow over the water and sand. The combination of exquisite food, the gentle lapping of waves, and the romantic moonlight created an anniversary memory we will forever cherish. It was the perfect culmination to our gourmet adventure at El Dorado Royale.

Stepping Back in Time: A Visit to Chichen Itza

One of the long-standing items on my lifetime “To-Do” list was to witness the majestic Mayan ruins. Being in the Yucatan Peninsula, I simply couldn’t let this incredible opportunity pass us by. We dedicated a day to history and culture, taking a bus tour on a Saturday to explore the awe-inspiring ruins of Chichen Itza.
This experience was so profound and rich that it could easily fill an entire series of blog posts. It was truly amazing and ignited a deep sense of wonder about the ancient Mayan civilization. Walking through Chichen Itza forces you to ponder the incredible intellectual prowess of the Mayan people, who accomplished so much using sophisticated astronomy and mathematics. Their understanding of the cosmos and their architectural precision are simply astounding, especially considering the tools and technology available to them at the time.

As I stood amidst these ancient structures, I had to continuously remind myself that I wasn’t at a meticulously recreated theme park like Disney World. These were authentic ruins, built between 495 and 1200 A.D., steeped in centuries of history and culture. The main pyramid at Chichen Itza, known as El Castillo (or the Temple of Kukulcan), is a masterpiece of architectural design. Its geometry is remarkably perfect, aligning precisely with the sun’s movements and the intricate Mayan Calendar. I would have loved to climb to the top for a panoramic bird’s-eye view of the entire archaeological site and to glimpse inside its inner chambers, but for preservation purposes, climbing is no longer permitted. Even from the ground, its grandeur is undeniable.

It is truly astounding to observe that many of the intricate carvings on the structures are still intact after all these centuries. This longevity speaks volumes about their initial craftsmanship, suggesting they were not only deeply carved but also incredibly impressive and robust when first created. The sheer artistry and engineering prowess of the Mayan people continue to captivate and inspire visitors from around the globe, making Chichen Itza an essential destination for any traveler to Mexico.
Farewell to Paradise: A Lingering Memory

As with all wonderful vacations, our week in the Riviera Maya seemed to pass far too quickly. It was incredibly difficult to leave the serene beauty and luxurious comfort of El Dorado Royale. However, the sight of an approaching storm along the coast made our departure just a little bit easier to accept. It felt like nature was giving us a gentle nudge, signaling it was time to return to reality.

I didn’t purchase any traditional souvenirs to bring home, but I did carefully pack a few pieces of beautiful brain coral, found washed ashore, into my suitcase. These natural treasures now sit proudly on my bookshelf, serving as a tangible reminder of the stunning marine life and the incredible beauty of the Mexican coast.

This trip to the El Dorado Royale in the Riviera Maya was truly an extraordinary experience, made even more special by the warm and hospitable Mexican people. Their kindness and genuine desire to make our stay memorable were evident at every turn. We are absolutely certain that we will return to this slice of paradise. This is one vacation that will remain etched in my memory for a very, very long time, filled with cherished moments, breathtaking scenery, and the joy of celebrating three decades of love.
