Our holiday adventures began with a delightful Christmas week spent in sunny Los Angeles. My husband, Ed, and I joined our older daughter, Kelly, and her beautiful family. There’s truly something magical about celebrating Christmas with grandchildren; their infectious joy and boundless energy made every moment memorable, easily making up for the chaos we knew was waiting for us back home with ongoing renovations.

Following our Californian Christmas, we journeyed to Charlottesville to ring in the New Year. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with our youngest daughter, Mandy, and her new husband, Matt. These precious family moments are the heart of the holidays, offering a chance to create lasting memories and recharge before diving back into our busy lives and, of course, our ongoing home projects.

Unveiling Big Changes in My Kitchen: A Journey to an Open, Modern Space

You might be surprised to see our Christmas tree in the living room, visible through a shroud of protective plastic sheeting! This image perfectly captures the state of our kitchen just the week before Christmas. Our living room, usually a haven of holiday comfort, was temporarily repurposed, filled with every conceivable item from the kitchen. It certainly wasn’t the cozy, festive atmosphere we typically create, and the persistent chill from our HVAC issue only added to the unique holiday experience this year. This “before” glimpse truly sets the stage for the dramatic transformation that unfolded.

Do you see the particular section of upper cabinets indicated by the arrow? These cabinets have been a focal point of my renovation dreams since the day we moved into this house nine years ago. Their removal was not just a design choice but a long-awaited enhancement to improve the flow and feel of our kitchen. This seemingly small change promised to unlock significant potential for a more open and contemporary aesthetic.

Before the extensive ceiling work began, Ed, with his incredible handyman skills, took on the task of removing that specific section of upper cabinets. This was a moment I had eagerly anticipated for years! The cabinets had always felt like a visual barrier, making the kitchen feel more enclosed than necessary. Their removal marked the true beginning of our kitchen’s transformation, paving the way for a much brighter and more inviting space.

The damage to the kitchen ceiling, caused by a fallen tree, inadvertently provided the perfect impetus for these long-desired changes. Since we needed to address the ceiling anyway, it was the ideal moment to finally remove those imposing cabinets and embark on a more comprehensive kitchen refresh. This synergy between necessity and desire often leads to the most impactful home transformations.

From this particular vantage point within the kitchen, the row of cabinets might not appear overly problematic. One might even think they blend in reasonably well. However, their true impact on the overall feel and functionality of the space was far more significant than this single angle reveals.

However, the perspective changes dramatically when viewed from the back. This is the view that greeted us every time we entered the house from the garage. These cabinets formed an undeniable blockade, effectively creating a dark and narrow hallway. I affectionately, or perhaps not so affectionately, coined it “the hallway of darkness.” It was a constant reminder of the closed-off nature of the space, something we were determined to remedy to enhance daily living and overall home aesthetics.

And with a triumphant sigh of relief, we bid “bye-bye” to those cabinets! This image captures the moment of liberation, a visual testament to the significant structural change that immediately began to open up the kitchen. The removal was more than just taking down wood and hardware; it was about tearing down a barrier that had long defined the space, allowing for light and flow to truly transform the heart of our home.

And just like that, we greeted an open, more spacious look and feel! The difference is truly remarkable. What was once a confined, somewhat isolated kitchen now feels seamlessly integrated with the rest of our home. This significant alteration immediately enhances the sense of airiness and light, transforming a previously cramped area into a welcoming, expansive environment ideal for modern living and entertaining. This open concept dramatically changes how we interact with and move through our home.

Entering the house now presents a dramatically improved visual experience. Even before the final ceiling paint was rolled on, the removal of the popcorn ceiling and the cabinets had an immediate and profound impact. The previous blockage is gone, replaced by an uninterrupted line of sight that draws the eye into a brighter, more inviting kitchen. This enhanced openness creates a seamless transition and a much more welcoming entryway into our home.

One of the more intricate tasks involved adding a custom piece of wood to close off the exposed side of the remaining wall cabinets. This was necessary because the cabinet section we removed and the existing wall cabinet were originally custom-built as one seamless wall/corner unit. Integrating this new piece ensures a polished, finished look, maintaining the continuity of the cabinetry despite the significant structural change we made. This attention to detail is crucial for a professional finish.

Another area requiring careful attention was the counter section where the structural support for the now-removed cabinets had been embedded. To achieve a smooth, continuous surface, we meticulously filled this empty space with a combination of wood and wood filler. Following this, the area was thoroughly sanded to create a perfectly level and seamless transition. This detailed work ensures the countertop looks as if it was always designed this way, highlighting our commitment to a flawless finish.

My next task for this area is to meticulously repaint it, ensuring it seamlessly matches the existing Carrara Marble look that I painstakingly painted onto the countertops several years ago. This detail work is essential to maintain the cohesive aesthetic of the kitchen and ensure the newly filled section blends perfectly with the established design. The goal is an indistinguishable finish, preserving the elegant appearance of our custom countertops.

I absolutely adore the new, expansive view from the foyer into the kitchen. The removal of the obstructing upper cabinets has dramatically opened up the space, making the entire area feel significantly larger and more inviting. This change has truly transformed the first impression of our home, creating a harmonious flow and a much more contemporary aesthetic. It’s an incredible difference that enhances both light and spatial perception.

Furthermore, I truly appreciate the functional flexibility offered by our integrated pocket doors. We now have the option to elegantly close off the studioffice from the kitchen, or alternatively, separate the kitchen from the foyer, simply by sliding these discreet doors into place. This thoughtful design allows us to customize the flow and privacy of our living spaces, creating distinct zones when needed, while maintaining an open feel when the doors are hidden. It’s a smart solution for a multi-functional home.

On the far wall, particularly around the doorway leading to the studioffice, I am excited to install the same stacked stone wallpaper that I previously added to the dining area of the kitchen. This strategic application will create a cohesive visual link between the spaces, adding texture, warmth, and a touch of rustic elegance. It’s these thoughtful design choices that truly unify a home’s aesthetic and bring a vision to life.

To truly finalize the kitchen renovation, my remaining tasks include meticulously finishing the caulking and painting of the crown molding on the cabinets that were temporarily removed for the ceiling to be redone. This detailed work is crucial for a polished, professional outcome. While I may not be a seasoned pro when it comes to installing crown molding, I always embrace the wisdom shared by my son-in-law, Matt, who wisely says: “Caulk and paint will make what it ain’t.” His encouraging words remind me that with a bit of precision and the right finishing touches, any DIY project can achieve a flawless appearance. This last phase is all about those small details that make a huge difference.
