But the utility doesn’t stop there.
With the simple addition of a decorative tray, your ottoman instantly converts into a chic coffee table, perfect for holding beverages, books, or a remote control. This feature is particularly useful in smaller spaces where a traditional coffee table might feel too bulky. For those who frequently entertain, ottomans are a lifesaver when extra seating is needed. They provide a comfortable, accessible spot for guests without dominating the visual space of a room.
And if you add wheels to the base, as we will in this project, your ottoman gains incredible mobility. Easily glide it from the sofa to an armchair, or tuck it away when not in use. This isn’t the first time this ottoman has received a refresh; it’s already on its third fabric change since its book cover debut! This adaptability allows you to effortlessly update your decor with new patterns, colors, or textures as your style evolves. Once this latest makeover is complete, I envision it serving as a comfortable and chic seat for my bedroom desk, proving once again its boundless functionality.
DIY No-Sew Ottoman: Building the Durable Base
Creating your own furniture might seem daunting, but this no-sew ottoman project is incredibly beginner-friendly. The key to a long-lasting and beautiful ottoman lies in a sturdy, well-constructed base. Here’s everything you’ll need to get started on this rewarding DIY journey.
Supplies Needed:
- One 12-inch x 1-inch x 6-foot Pine Board: Pine is an excellent choice for its workability and affordability. When purchasing, ask your lumber yard to cut the board into two 16 3/4-inch pieces and two 14 3/4-inch pieces. Precise cuts are crucial for a square and stable base, so don’t hesitate to utilize their professional cutting services.
- One 24-inch Decorator Round Wood Tabletop: This will form the sturdy circular top of your ottoman, providing a firm foundation for the foam cushion. Its pre-cut round shape saves you the effort of complex carpentry.
- 24-inch Square, 3-inch Thick Piece of High-Density Foam: High-density foam is essential for a comfortable and resilient cushion that will hold its shape over time. While a 24-inch square piece is specified, ensure it’s slightly larger than your round tabletop to allow for trimming.
- Eight 1-inch Wood Screws: These will be used for assembling the primary frame of the base and securing the round tabletop.
- Eight 1/2 to 1-inch Wood Screws: These shorter screws are perfect for attaching the corner brackets without penetrating through the wood.
- Four 1-inch Corner Brackets or Angle Irons: These metal brackets are vital for reinforcing the inner corners of your wooden base, adding significant stability and durability.
- Screwdriver: A reliable screwdriver set (or a power drill with appropriate bits) will be necessary for secure assembly.
- 4 Wheels (Casters): Opt for durable casters, ideally with a locking mechanism for added stability when the ottoman is stationary. These will give your ottoman its desirable mobility.
Step-by-Step Base Construction
Before you begin, ensure you have a clear, flat workspace and all your tools and materials are within reach. Safety first: if using a power drill, always wear appropriate eye protection.
The image above illustrates the core components of our ottoman base after the fabric and foam top have been removed, giving you a clear view of the underlying structure. You can see how the decorator table top serves as the foundation for the cushion, and the wheels are securely attached to the very bottom of the base for effortless movement.
Step 1: Assemble the Rectangular Frame (Figure 1).
Take your pre-cut pine boards. Arrange the two 16 3/4-inch pieces and two 14 3/4-inch pieces to form a rectangle. The longer pieces will overlap the ends of the shorter pieces. Using the 1-inch wood screws, carefully attach the boards at each corner. It’s highly recommended to pre-drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting, especially when working near the ends of the boards. Ensure your corners are square and the frame is stable. This rectangular frame will be the primary support structure for your ottoman.
Step 2: Reinforce with Corner Brackets (Figure 2).
To enhance the durability and stability of your ottoman base, add the metal corner brackets (or angle irons) to each inside corner of the assembled wooden frame. Use the shorter 1/2-inch to 1-inch screws for this step. Position each bracket snugly into the corner and secure it with screws into both adjoining pieces of wood. These brackets are crucial as they prevent the frame from wiggling or separating over time, especially with regular use.
Step 3: Attach the Round Tabletop (Figure 3).
Carefully place your 24-inch round decorator tabletop onto the top of your assembled wooden base. Take your time to center it perfectly. Once aligned, use the 1-inch screws to securely attach the tabletop to the top edges of the base frame. Drive screws evenly around the perimeter of the tabletop, ensuring a firm and level attachment. This round piece will be the sturdy platform upon which your foam cushion will rest, providing the characteristic circular shape of your ottoman.
Step 4: Prepare and Cut the Foam Cushion.
Now that your base is constructed, it’s time to prepare the cushion. Lay your 3-inch thick, high-density foam flat on the floor. Carefully place the newly constructed wooden base upside down on top of the foam. Ensure the round tabletop side is facing the foam. Trace the precise outline of the round tabletop onto the foam using a marker.
For the cleanest and most accurate cut, an electric kitchen knife (the kind you might use to carve a turkey) is your secret weapon. Slowly and steadily cut along your traced line.
