However, this minimalist approach unexpectedly highlighted the existing decor, making the wall paint and the fabric bed hanging appear somewhat dated and dingy by comparison. This realization sparked a new mission: to completely revitalize the room, starting with the focal point – the bed itself. One Sunday morning, I decisively pulled down the old bed hanging, ready to embark on a fresh and transformative bedroom update.

This is what the wall looked like after I removed the fabric bed hanging – a blank canvas awaiting its transformation. The hunt for the perfect doors led me to my local Habitat for Humanity ReStore, an absolute treasure trove for DIY enthusiasts. I had actually purchased three bi-fold doors a few years prior to create a decorative folding screen that you might spot in the corner of my room. Realizing their potential for this new project, I decided to carefully dismantle the screen to repurpose those three doors.

To achieve the desired width for a king-size bed, I needed two more doors. The initial three had cost me a very reasonable $7 apiece. How to Make a Grand Bed Headboard Using Repurposed Doors

Lumber for Support: A 1″ x 2″ or 2″ x 4″ piece of lumber, cut to the total width of your assembled headboard. This will serve as a horizontal cleat to support the base of the doors.
Crown Molding: The length will be determined by the total width of your headboard. This adds a finished, architectural detail to the top.
Wood Screws: Various lengths, suitable for attaching doors to studs and molding to doors. Ensure they are long enough to securely penetrate the wall studs.
Spackle or Wood Filler: And a putty knife to apply it, for filling screw holes and any imperfections in the doors.
Primer: Essential for preparing the doors for a smooth, even paint finish, especially when dealing with varied materials or previous finishes.
Paint: I used Valspar Bistro White in a semi-gloss finish. Semi-gloss is durable, easy to clean, and offers a subtle sheen that enhances architectural details.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide:

1. Prepare and Arrange Your Doors: The number of doors you need will depend on your bed’s width. For my King-size bed, I used five bi-fold style doors. Although the panel design wasn’t identical on all my doors, their height was consistent. I carefully arranged them to create a visually symmetrical panel design across the entire headboard. If you can find hollow-core doors, they will be much easier to handle and hang due to their lighter weight. Two of my doors were solid, which made them quite heavy, so proper support was paramount. Before installation, clean your doors thoroughly, sand any rough spots, and remove any old hardware. Fill any existing holes (like those from old doorknobs or hinges) with wood filler or spackle, let dry, and sand smooth.

2. Install the Horizontal Support Board: My goal was a ceiling-to-floor headboard. To achieve this, I needed to add a horizontal support piece of lumber (a 1″ x 2″ or 2″ x 4″) to the wall. To determine its placement, I measured the total height of the room and subtracted the height of one of the doors. The resulting difference indicated where the top edge of this support board should be positioned on the wall. Use a level to ensure it’s perfectly straight, and secure it firmly into wall studs with wood screws. (You might notice some thin boards under my 1″ x 2″ in the photo – these were shims I added to compensate for a slightly warped section of my lumber, ensuring a perfectly solid and level base. You likely won’t need to do this if your lumber is straight. One long, sturdy piece of lumber is ideal.)

3. Mark Wall Studs: Using a stud finder, carefully locate and mark the positions of the wall studs along the entire width of where your headboard will be. It’s crucial to mark these spots just below the horizontal 1″ x 2″ support board so that your marks remain visible even after the doors are placed. Attaching the doors directly into studs provides the strongest and safest installation.

4. Determine and Mark the Center: Find the exact center of your wall where the headboard will be installed. Mark this point both just below the horizontal support board and lightly on the ceiling. This center mark will serve as your centering guide, ensuring the headboard is perfectly aligned with your wall and bed. For the ceiling mark, a piece of painter’s tape is useful to avoid making any permanent pencil marks.

5. Mount the Doors: Begin by placing the center door first, aligning it with your center marks. Rest the bottom edge of the door on the horizontal support board. Then, working outwards to each side, carefully position the remaining doors. Each door should be securely screwed into the wall in at least two places – typically near the top and bottom of the door – ensuring these screws penetrate into the wall studs for maximum stability. Before driving screws, pre-drill pilot holes to prevent wood splitting. Once secured, counter-sink the screws slightly below the surface of the wood. Cover the screw heads and any previously filled holes (from doorknobs) with spackle or wood filler. Allow it to dry completely, then sand the areas smooth with 100-grit sandpaper for a flawless finish.

6. Customize for Wall Features (e.g., Outlets): In my case, one of the end doors covered an electrical outlet. To maintain functionality, we used a jigsaw to precisely cut out the corner of the door, creating a neat opening around the outlet. This step highlights the advantage of a DIY headboard – you can perfectly customize it to your room’s specific needs. Take accurate measurements and draw your cut lines carefully before cutting to ensure a clean, professional edge.

If you’re using new molding, measure the width of your headboard, cut the molding to size (using mitered corners if you want a return on the ends), and secure it with finishing nails or small screws, filling the holes afterward.

8. Caulk, Prime, and Paint for a Flawless Finish: To create a truly seamless, built-in look, I used white paintable caulk to fill in any tiny gaps between the individual doors, as well as along the top edge where the crown molding meets the ceiling (if applicable) and where the doors meet the wall on the sides. Caulk effectively hides imperfections and creates a smooth, professional finish. Once the caulk was dry, I applied a high-quality primer over the entire headboard, including the doors and molding. Primer ensures excellent paint adhesion and a uniform base, especially crucial when painting over varied surfaces. Finally, I applied two coats of Valspar Bistro White in a semi-gloss finish. The semi-gloss provides a beautiful, subtle sheen that highlights the architectural details of the doors and is incredibly durable and easy to clean.

While I was fortunate to reuse existing crown molding, a new piece would typically cost around $20. Adding in the cost of primer, paint, and screws, the entire headboard project came in at well under $50.
