Welcome to a world of vibrant home decor where furniture makeovers are not only stunning but also temporary, budget-friendly, and require absolutely no paint! Today, we’re diving into a creative transformation using everyday fabric and liquid starch, a method that allows you to refresh your pieces seasonally or whenever inspiration strikes, without causing any damage to the original finish. Best of all, there’s no sewing or ironing involved, making this a truly accessible DIY project for everyone.

Imagine giving an old dresser, a tired table, or even drab kitchen cabinets a complete personality overhaul in just a few hours. This innovative technique offers a reversible way to experiment with colors and patterns, breathing new life into your living spaces. Whether you’re a renter looking for non-permanent decorating solutions, or simply love changing your home’s aesthetic on a whim, this fabric and liquid starch method is your perfect companion.

For my monthly Waverly Inspirations challenge, I was tasked with creating something for spring using five beautiful fabric patterns. The goal was to incorporate as many of these vibrant materials as possible into a single project. The result is a delightful example of how this simple method can yield stunning, custom results.
I utilized all five of the provided spring fabrics to transform what was once a…

…plain white dresser into a truly unique statement piece. In just a few hours, this ordinary furniture item underwent a remarkable metamorphosis.

…a very colorful dresser, now complete with charming fabric flower drawer knobs that perfectly complement its new spring-inspired aesthetic.

The Magic Behind Fabric Furniture Makeovers: Liquid Starch Explained
Liquid starch acts as a remarkable temporary adhesive, allowing fabric to cling to surfaces without the commitment of permanent glue. Its genius lies in its reversibility: when you’re ready for a change, simply spray the fabric with water to dampen it, and you can easily peel it off without damaging the furniture’s original finish. This makes it an ideal solution for renters, seasonal decorators, or anyone who enjoys updating their home decor frequently.
Fabric, once saturated with liquid starch, will adhere to almost any clean, smooth surface. Think of liquid starch as you would a craft glue or Mod Podge, but with the added benefit of being temporary. This opens up a world of possibilities for transforming various items around your house. While flat, simple pieces of furniture work best for ease of application, this method can be adapted for surfaces big or small. However, it’s generally not recommended for valuable antiques where even minor changes are undesirable. It works exceptionally well on painted furniture, as well as:
- Kitchen cabinet panels for a quick kitchen refresh.
- Lining the inside of drawers, adding a pop of pattern.
- As decorative backdrops in china cabinets or bookshelves.
- Covering window panes for a soft, diffused light (check lightfastness of fabric).
- On painted walls, offering a removable alternative to wallpaper.

The charming fabric flower knobs featured on this dresser were created by layering fabric cut-outs beneath the existing drawer hardware. These delightful details make the dresser perfect for a spring refresh, or an adorable addition to a little girl’s room, allowing for seamless coordination with bedding and curtains. This personalized touch elevates the entire makeover, making the piece truly unique.
Beyond its versatility and reversibility, using fabric and liquid starch is also an incredibly budget-friendly way to transform furniture. You don’t need extensive yardage of expensive fabric to make a significant impact. A single bottle of liquid starch typically costs around $3.00, and for a project like this dresser, I only used about two cups. This makes it an economical choice for anyone looking to update their decor without a hefty investment.
Your Comprehensive Guide: Furniture Makeover Using Fabric and Liquid Starch
Ready to give your furniture a vibrant, no-paint makeover? Follow these simple steps to transform your pieces with fabric and liquid starch.

Supplies Needed:
- Waverly Inspirations Fabrics: Choose fabrics that complement your desired aesthetic. I used 5 different patterns for a varied look. Remember to measure the surfaces of your furniture piece carefully to determine the exact yardage you will need, adding a little extra for trimming and potential shrinkage.
- Liquid Starch: Available in the laundry detergent aisle. Any brand will work.
- Sharp Scissors: Essential for clean, precise fabric cuts. Consider dedicating a pair solely for fabric.
- Measuring Tape: For accurate measurements of your furniture and fabric.
- Small-Tipped Paint Brush: Ideal for applying starch to edges, corners, and reinforcing specific areas.
- Bucket: For soaking your fabric in liquid starch.
- Plastic Drop Cloth or Dollar Store Shower Curtain Liner: To protect your work surface from starch spills and drips.
- Plastic Spatula or Smoother: Optional, but highly recommended for removing air bubbles and wrinkles during application.
- Craft Knife with a Sharp Blade: For precise trimming of dry fabric.
- Ruler or Straight Edge: To guide your craft knife for perfectly straight cuts.

Step-by-Step Fabric Application Process:
1. Prepare and Roughly Cut Your Fabric: Decide which sections of your furniture you wish to cover. For this dresser, I focused on the top and sides, but you can certainly cover drawer fronts as well. Lay your chosen fabric over the surface you intend to cover. To get a preliminary cut, you can gently tape the fabric to the sides, allowing you to cut it close to the estimated size. It’s crucial to leave a little extra fabric (about 1-2 inches on all sides) to account for any slight shrinkage and to provide room for precise trimming once the fabric is dry and adhered. Don’t worry about cutting perfectly straight or to exact dimensions at this stage; final trimming will be done later, ensuring a crisp finish.

2. Protect Your Workspace: This project can get a bit messy due to the liquid starch. Before you begin applying fabric, lay a plastic drop cloth or a disposable shower curtain liner under and around your furniture piece. This will protect your floors and surrounding areas from any drips or spills, making cleanup much easier.
3. Saturate Your Fabric with Starch: Pour a few cups of liquid starch into your bucket. Submerge your pre-cut fabric piece into the starch, swishing it around to ensure it is thoroughly saturated. You want the fabric to be completely wet with starch. While you might initially pour more starch than needed to fully cover the fabric, remember that any unused starch can be poured back into its original bottle once you’ve finished soaking your fabric.

4. Apply Fabric to Furniture and Smooth: Once the fabric is saturated, gently pull it out of the bucket and remove some of the excess starch by running your fingers over it. It should be damp but not dripping. Carefully place the wet fabric over the desired surface of your furniture. Immediately use a plastic spatula or your hands to smooth the fabric, working from the center outwards. This step is critical for ensuring the pattern remains straight and for removing all air bubbles and wrinkles for a flawless finish. Take your time to achieve a perfectly smooth application. Allow the fabric to dry completely; this could take several hours or overnight depending on humidity.

5. Secure Edges and Corners: Once the main surface is smoothed, carefully wrap the fabric around the corners and edges of the furniture piece. Use your small-tipped paint brush to apply additional liquid starch underneath and over these wrapped edges. This ensures the fabric adheres firmly and prevents any lifting as it dries. Pay close attention to corners to achieve a clean, well-defined look. Let these areas dry thoroughly.

6. Trim Excess Fabric from Corners: Once the fabric is completely dry and stiff, use your sharp scissors to carefully cut away any excess fabric from the corners, as demonstrated in the image above. This step refines the shape and prepares the edges for a neat finish.

7. Reinforce Cut Sections: After trimming the corners, use your small-tipped paint brush to apply a thin layer of liquid starch over these newly cut edges. This helps to further seal the fabric down, preventing fraying and ensuring a smooth, secure bond with the furniture surface.

8. Precision Edge Trimming: With the fabric fully dry and stiff, use a craft knife with a very sharp blade to carefully cut away any remaining excess fabric wrapped around the edges of the furniture. For best results, hold the excess fabric taut with one hand while using the knife to make a clean cut with the other. The sharp blade will slice through the stiffened fabric with ease, creating a clean, professional edge.

9. Final Trimming Along Bottom Edges: For a truly polished look, use the craft knife to cut away any excess fabric along the bottom edges of your furniture. If your piece has grooves or distinct lines, follow these for a natural finish. Alternatively, use a straight edge or ruler to guide your knife and ensure a perfectly straight cut. This final trimming creates a neat, seamless appearance, making your fabric application look professionally done.

Adding Charming Details: How to Make Fabric Flower Drawer Knobs
To truly elevate your furniture makeover and add a unique, personalized touch, consider crafting these adorable fabric flower drawer knobs. They are the perfect complement to your newly decorated piece and a fantastic way to coordinate your fabrics.

Supplies Needed for Fabric Flower Knobs:
- Existing or New Drawer Knobs: Choose knobs that suit your style. Similar ones can be found here.
- Flower Pattern .pdf: Essential for creating consistent flower templates.
- 4-1/4″ Diameter Plate: Used as a guide for making fabric yo-yos.
- Sharp Scissors: For precise fabric cutting.
- Awl or Small Scissors: To create a neat hole for the knob screw.
- Pencil: For tracing patterns onto fabric.
- Plastic Wrap: For drying starch-soaked fabric pieces.
- Needle and Thread: For hand-stitching the yo-yo rosettes.

- Download the Flower Pattern: First, you’ll need the templates for your fabric flowers. Download and print the patterns for Fabric Flower Drawer Pulls from this link. Cut out the patterns to prepare your templates.

2. Craft Your Fabric Yo-Yo Rosettes: Begin by tracing a 4-1/4″ diameter plate onto your chosen fabric. Cut out the fabric circle. Using a needle and thread, create a simple basting stitch about a 1/4″ in from the edge of the circle, all the way around. Once you’ve stitched the entire circumference, gently pull the thread to gather the fabric, forming a rosette shape. Secure the raw edges together with a few strong stitches. Flatten the yo-yo and set it aside. These will form the base of your fabric flowers.

3. Prepare Flower Shapes for Starching: Trace both the small and large flower patterns (from your downloaded PDF) onto your desired fabrics. You will need one of each size for every drawer knob you plan to embellish. Cut roughly around the traced flower shapes, but do not cut them out in detail yet. It’s best to wait until the fabric pieces are stiff from the starch before making your precise cuts; this technique helps prevent the cut edges from unraveling and ensures a cleaner finish.

4. Starch and Dry Your Flower Cut-outs: Pour some liquid starch onto a plate. Submerge the roughly cut fabric squares with the traced flower patterns into the starch, ensuring they are fully saturated. Remove any excess starch by gently squeezing the fabric with your hands. Lay each starch-soaked fabric piece flat on plastic wrap to dry completely. The plastic wrap prevents them from sticking and makes for easy removal once dry.

5. Precision Cutting of Stiffened Fabric Flowers: Once the fabric is completely dry, it will be noticeably stiff. This stiffness makes it much easier to cut intricate shapes without fraying. Carefully cut out the exact flower shapes by following your traced lines. For efficiency and consistency, you can pin a few pieces of the same size together and cut them all at once.

6. Layering Your Fabric Flowers: Now it’s time to assemble your fabric flower components. Take one fabric yo-yo rosette (the base), layer a large fabric flower on top of it, and then place a smaller fabric flower on the very top, as shown in the example image. Arrange them neatly, ensuring the patterns and colors are appealing.

7. Creating the Screw Hole: Carefully use an awl or the tip of a small pair of scissors to create a small hole through the center of your layered fabric flower assembly. This hole should be just large enough for the knob’s screw to pass through. Ensure it is centered for a balanced look.

8. Attaching Your New Knobs: With the hole created, thread the screw of your drawer knob through the fabric flower layers. Then, attach the knob to the drawer using the nuts that came with the knobs. Tighten securely, but be careful not to overtighten and damage the fabric. Repeat this process for all your drawer pulls.

For a truly personalized touch, you can mix a variety of fabrics in each flower, as I did, to create unique combinations. Alternatively, use a single color or pattern for a more cohesive look, resulting in different styles of charming fabric flowers. The possibilities for customization are endless!
