Its location is truly ideal, positioned on the serene outskirts of the Columbia, SC Metropolitan Area to the east, yet a comfortable 80 miles from the vibrant city of Greenville on the western side of the state. For everyday essentials and budget-friendly finds, there’s a Dollar General. The town also supports a variety of personal services, including two dry cleaners and several hair salons, making daily errands a breeze. Two day spas provide opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation, while two banks and a UPS store handle financial and shipping needs. Among Chapin’s local establishments, the Lake Murray Flower Shoppe stands out as one of the most charming. Although it has since transitioned into a real estate office, its legacy of beauty and community charm persists. I particularly enjoyed witnessing their approach to exterior decoration.
They always managed to imbue the exterior of the shop with a vibrant, creative style, frequently changing the displays to reflect seasons or current trends. It was a delightful visual treat that added a unique artistic flair to our town.
Just beyond the immediate town limits, but still very much a part of the greater Chapin area, are two additional essential destinations: an Ace Hardware and a notable furniture store. I find myself frequenting both of these establishments quite often. Ace Hardware is my go-to for all home improvement project supplies, a local resource that consistently has what I need. Chapin Furniture, on the other hand, is a haven for decorating inspiration. They boast a fabulous selection of furniture, and the store layout is thoughtfully designed, making it ideal for a quick spin to gather ideas or simply appreciate beautiful design.
When it comes to dining and coffee, Chapin offers delightful options. There are two cozy coffee shops and a handful of local restaurants. My absolute favorite is Farm Boys BBQ, renowned for serving the best pork BBQ in the region. And then there’s The Coffee Shelf, a place I have to consciously try to avoid. This area serves as our larger retail and entertainment hub.
To maximize efficiency and minimize trips, I’ve adopted a strategic approach: I maintain a running list of everything I need throughout the week and plan ahead to consolidate all my shopping into a single day. This ensures I don’t forget anything essential. My friends and I affectionately refer to these concentrated shopping excursions as “Harbison days.” Given the drive, meticulous planning with a comprehensive shopping list is absolutely key to saving both valuable time and precious gas money.
For more specialized stores, such as Hobby Lobby for craft supplies or a health food store, I head to Lexington, which is situated on the southeast corner of Lake Murray. This journey typically takes about 45 minutes and offers a spectacularly scenic route over the iconic Dreher Shoals Dam, famously known as The Lake Murray Dam. The drive itself becomes part of the experience, offering breathtaking views that never get old.

In the early 1940s, the U.S. military utilized the lake as a crucial training ground for its bomber pilots, specifically for the B-25 bomber airplanes.
