Many of you might recall my post about their wedding just a few months ago. Following their nuptials, they settled into Mandy’s charming house, a cozy cottage she had lovingly transformed over the past three years. This quaint dwelling, a true reflection of her style, was a happy home, but as they began to plan for their future together and the possibility of starting a family, it became clear they needed more space.

The decision was made to sell the beloved “Happy Cottage” and find a larger home. To their delight, and with a touch of good fortune, they found their dream home in record time. It was an older residence, brimming with character, that had already received some thoughtful updates, making it an ideal canvas for their next chapter.

Once their new home was secured, the “Happy Cottage” was put on the market, and to everyone’s amazement, it sold in a remarkably swift week. This rapid sale underscored the appeal of Mandy’s cozy design and allowed them to seamlessly transition to the next phase of their lives.

The closing on both properties happened last week, setting the stage for an exciting, albeit busy, period. Instead of moving directly into their new place, Mandy and Matt ingeniously arranged to rent the “Happy Cottage” for an additional week. This clever interim period was dedicated entirely to pre-move-in renovations at the new house. Their ambitious to-do list included painting several dark downstairs rooms to align with their brighter aesthetic, installing new flooring in the sunroom, and having the beautiful hardwood floors throughout the entire house professionally refinished.

This new residence is a treasure, an older house that exudes charm and history at every turn. It boasts an updated kitchen that blends modern convenience with classic appeal, elegant pocket doors that slide silently into walls, intricate molding that speaks to its heritage, and gleaming hardwood floors that stretch across most of its expansive layout. The only exceptions to the hardwood are the kitchen, laundry room, and the sunroom, which were slated for specific flooring treatments.

Transforming Dark Spaces: The Downstairs Before Painting

The impact of wall color on a room’s atmosphere cannot be overstated; it truly can make or break the feeling of a space. Mandy and Matt both shared a vision for a lighter, airier home, a stark contrast to some of the existing palettes. Their primary goal for this initial renovation phase was to infuse the downstairs rooms with a fresh, vibrant energy by applying lighter paint colors.

This endeavor brought a palpable new energy into the house, even with only the first floor completed. The upstairs bedrooms, bath, and hallway also feature dark walls, which they plan to tackle themselves after they’ve officially moved in. For now, our focus was solely on the main living areas, where the most dramatic transformations could be achieved.

The foyer, the very entrance to their home, was previously painted a deep, somewhat somber dark green. While rich, this color made the entryway feel enclosed. We aimed to brighten this space considerably. However, a significant challenge arose: the towering stairwell area. Lacking an appropriately large ladder for such heights, we made the pragmatic decision to leave the upper sections of the staircase wall in its original dark green for the time being, allowing it to temporarily serve as a striking, albeit unplanned, accent wall. This decision highlighted the practical realities and compromises often faced in DIY renovations.

Adjacent to the foyer, the living room presented its own challenge, bathed in what could best be described as a traditional Christmas green. This deep hue, while perhaps festive, did little to enhance the room’s natural light or contemporary feel. It was clear that a significant shift in color was needed to create the bright, inviting atmosphere Mandy and Matt envisioned for their main gathering space.

The transition from such saturated dark colors to lighter, softer shades is no small feat. To ensure proper coverage and a truly fresh start, we meticulously applied two coats of a high-quality white primer to several of these deeply pigmented walls. This crucial step not only blocked the original dark colors from bleeding through but also created an ideal, neutral base for the new, lighter paints to shine.

Moving into the dining room, we encountered another bold choice: the walls were painted a striking, almost glossy dark blue. This rich, reflective finish, while perhaps intended to add drama, contributed to a sense of formality and dimness that didn’t align with the welcoming, bright ambiance Mandy and Matt desired for their home. The intensity and shininess of this particular paint meant that even more careful preparation and coverage would be needed to completely eradicate it and pave the way for its fresh, new identity. It certainly demanded a significant amount of paint to achieve the desired transformation.

Indeed, its very sheen indicated a durable, yet challenging, surface for repainting. We knew that achieving a uniform, lighter color would require patience and thoroughness, making the priming step even more critical here. The goal was not just to cover the color but to entirely neutralize its strong presence, setting the stage for a completely different aesthetic.

Sunroom Transformation: New Flooring Installation

Our weekend renovation efforts weren’t confined solely to painting walls. Another significant project on the agenda was the complete overhaul of the sunroom. This delightful, light-filled space was unfortunately marred by very old, incredibly “stinky” carpeting. Removing this aged flooring was a top priority to enhance the overall cleanliness and appeal of the home.

Ed took on the challenging task of ripping up the old carpet, meticulously removing every tack and staple embedded in the floor. Once the carpet was gone, revealing the subfloor beneath, it was my turn. Getting down on my hands and knees, I undertook the unenviable but crucial job of thoroughly scrubbing the floor. The lingering odor was potent, requiring multiple rounds of cleaning. I scrubbed and rinsed the entire surface three times, determined to eliminate every last trace of the unpleasant smell and grime, until the floor was impeccably clean and fresh. Only after it was completely dry did Ed and Matt commence the exciting work of laying down the brand-new flooring for the room, a process that would entirely transform its functionality and aesthetic.

The satisfaction of seeing a clean, fresh surface after hours of arduous work was immense. This meticulous preparation was vital, not only for cleanliness but also to ensure the proper installation and longevity of the new flooring. It’s a testament to how crucial often-overlooked preparatory steps are in any successful home renovation project.

Embracing Light: Rolling on Brighter Paint Colors

With the demanding priming stage behind us, the real magic began: applying the new, lighter paint colors. After two thorough coats of primer, the foyer walls received their final flourish with Valspar Bistro White. This crisp, inviting shade immediately brightened the entry, creating a sense of openness and welcome that was previously absent. The transformation was dramatic, instantly changing the mood of the space from dark and heavy to light and airy, perfectly aligning with Mandy and Matt’s vision for their new home.

The living room walls, previously cloaked in that intense Christmas green, also required diligent priming. We applied several coats of primer, ensuring that the vibrant green was completely obscured and wouldn’t interfere with the new, softer color. This preparatory work was essential for achieving a flawless finish and ensuring the chosen light paint could truly express its intended shade without any underlying color influencing its appearance. It’s often said that 90% of painting is preparation, and this project certainly underscored that wisdom.

The dining room is set for a particularly elegant design treatment. It will feature horizontal molding, artfully dividing the walls into two distinct sections for a two-tone paint scheme. The upper portion of the walls will be painted in the clean and classic Valspar Bistro White, mirroring the brightness of the foyer. Below the molding, a delicate and refreshing shade of Valspar Pillow Mint will be applied, adding a subtle touch of color and sophistication. This combination promises to create a dining space that is both bright and inviting, perfect for intimate dinners and lively gatherings.

From the vantage point of the kitchen, we could observe the sweeping progress of our painting efforts, a testament to a weekend of concerted teamwork. The sheer volume of work was considerable, but with each completed section, the sense of accomplishment grew, driving us forward until every dark wall had been thoroughly prepped and painted with its new, lighter hue. It was a true labor of love, transforming these spaces inch by painstaking inch.

The Bright Aftermath: Painted Walls Revealed

While I regret not capturing “after” shots of the dining room and foyer in their fully painted glory during our whirlwind weekend, I am delighted to share a glimpse of the living room. Here, the walls have been beautifully transformed with a soft, inviting shade of SW Pinkish, utterly changing the character of the space.

The immediate effect of this lighter color is profound; it has truly opened up the room, making it feel significantly more spacious and airy than its previous dark green incarnation. This soft, subtle hue perfectly aligns with Mandy and Matt’s decorating style, offering a fresh, modern, and incredibly welcoming foundation for their furnishings and personal touches. The room now feels bright, optimistic, and ready to embrace new memories.

With the painting complete, these rooms are already well on their way to becoming ideal living spaces. The next steps for their full completion include selecting and installing new light fixtures and choosing window treatments. However, these finishing touches can comfortably wait until after Mandy and Matt have officially moved into the house and settled in. The most impactful and labor-intensive changes have been made, creating a beautiful and functional foundation for their new life.

While Mandy and I were engrossed in the transformative work of painting, Ed and Matt undertook the equally significant task of installing the new plank flooring in the sunroom. This high-quality flooring, a fantastic find, was sourced from the Habitat ReStore in Charlottesville. This not only provided them with durable and attractive material but also supported a wonderful community initiative.

The duo proved to be an incredibly efficient team. Working seamlessly together, they managed to complete the entire flooring installation, including the meticulous task of attaching the base molding, all within our intense renovation weekend. Their combined effort and skill ensured that the sunroom was not only clean but also boasted a beautiful, new, and resilient floor, ready for years of enjoyment. This hands-on approach by the family underscored the personal investment and shared excitement in making this house truly their own.

Adding another layer of enhancement to their new home, the rest of the house features gorgeous hardwood flooring. These floors are currently undergoing a professional refinishing process, a crucial step to restore their original luster and beauty before Mandy and Matt officially move in this Sunday. This comprehensive approach to flooring ensures that every room will present a pristine and polished foundation for their new life. Coordinating these different renovation efforts simultaneously, all before moving day, highlights their meticulous planning and dedication to creating a perfect living space from the outset.

While the hardwood floors in the main areas are being refinished – a process that necessitates keeping those rooms clear – Mandy and Matt are making excellent use of their time. They are strategically transporting kitchen items to the house and meticulously organizing them into their newly refreshed kitchen. This smart approach allows them to begin the unpacking process in an accessible room without disturbing the delicate refinishing work in other parts of the house. It’s an efficient way to get a head start on settling in, transforming the kitchen into a fully functional heart of their new home even before their official move-in day.

Currently slated for storage, this versatile outbuilding holds incredible potential – it could easily be transformed into a charming guest house or a dedicated workshop, adding immense value and flexibility to the property.
