How to Transform a 3-Tiered Stand into a Shorter 2-Tiered Kitchen Basket and Tray Stand

Tools and Supplies Needed for Your Tiered Stand Project:

Existing tiered stand or components from a plate stand
Assorted metal washers (to adjust height and secure)
Appropriately sized large screw and matching nut
Twine (or burlap strands for a resourceful alternative)
Tacky Glue
Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
Awl or drill (for making a hole in the basket, if needed)

  1. Step 1: Gather Your Parts and Essential Supplies

    Begin by carefully disassembling your existing tiered stand. For this project, I specifically needed the sturdy pedestal base, the central threaded rod, any decorative rod covers, and the largest round tray from the original set. Additionally, I selected a round wicker basket, ensuring it had a suitable base for modification. Using an awl (or a drill with an appropriate bit), I created a rod-sized hole precisely in the center bottom of the wicker basket, allowing it to slide onto the central rod.

  2. Step 2: Utilize a Sturdy Machine Screw for Assembly

    The core of a stable tiered stand often relies on a robust machine screw. Select a screw and a matching nut that fit the threads of your central rod. This combination will be crucial for securing the entire structure and ensuring its longevity.   3. Step 3: Create a Secure Stopper and Assemble the Tiers

Then, carefully thread your prepared wicker basket onto the rod, followed by the narrower rod cover. After these components are in place, you may find that the screw end of the rod is just slightly short of the top of the final rod cover. To ensure a completely secure structure, find a nut that perfectly fits the threads at the end of the rod. Screw this nut onto the rod. If the screw you have on hand is still a little too long even after tightening the nut, simply add a few metal washers to cover the excess threaded section of the screw. Once the top screw is tightened down against the washers, the entire assembly will be incredibly stable and ready for use.

  4. Step 4: Conceal the Washers to Craft a Decorative Finial Base

    To transform the functional washers into an attractive part of your finial, apply a thin layer of tacky glue around the sides of the stacked washers. Then, carefully begin wrapping twine tightly around them, ensuring full coverage. For a neat finish, tuck the ends of the twine securely into the channel on the very top of the screw, creating a seamless and decorative transition. This step adds a rustic, textured element that complements the wicker basket beautifully.

  5. Step 5: Secure the Twine Wrap with Hot Glue

    Once the twine is neatly wrapped and positioned, apply a small dot of hot glue to firmly secure the ends, preventing them from unraveling. This ensures your finial base remains pristine. (A quick tip: If you anticipate wanting to disassemble the stand in the future, avoid placing hot glue directly where the screw meets the washers, allowing for easier removal.) This step provides a lasting finish to your DIY finial.
