You’ll be delighted to know that almost everything required for this simple yet impactful project is readily available at Walmart, with the exception of the plywood. This makes gathering your materials incredibly convenient and budget-friendly.

• Sterilite Storage Crate – ensure you choose the rectangular shape for this specific cushion size.
• 1 yard Waverly Inspirations fabric – select a pattern and color that suits your style and coordinates with your chosen crate. Durable fabrics are recommended for seating.
• Semi-gloss craft paint – I used the vibrant shades of Lagoon, Sunshine, and Fuchsia to complement my crates.
• 1 – 30″ long piece of ribbon – for attaching the chalkboard label.
• 1 – 8″ long piece of ribbon – for creating the convenient cushion pull tab.
• 18″ x 18″ pillow form or 2″ thick cushion foam – choose based on your desired level of softness and cushion profile.
• 1/4″ thick plywood cut to size: 15-11/16″ x 12-11/16″ – precise dimensions are crucial for a snug fit.
• Chalkboard sign – a small, pre-made one works perfectly.
• Chalk – for customizing your labels.
• Staple gun and 1/4″ staples – an essential tool for securely attaching the fabric.

Step-by-Step Instructions: Crafting Your Comfortable Crate Seat

1. Prepare Your Plywood Base: Begin by visiting your local home improvement store and having them cut a piece of 1/4″ or 1/2″ thick plywood to the precise dimensions of 15-11/16″ x 12-11/16″. This measurement is specifically tailored to fit snugly on top of the interior lip of the Sterilite storage crates found at Walmart. A precise cut ensures a stable and secure seating surface that won’t shift.

   Paint the Underside (Optional but Recommended): Take your plywood base and paint one side with a semi-gloss craft paint. I chose the serene color Lagoon for my project. Allow the paint to dry completely. Once your seat is assembled, this painted side will form the underside of the cover. While this step is entirely optional, I highly recommend it as it provides a polished, finished look from all angles, even when the cushion is removed or lifted. It’s a small detail that elevates the overall craftsmanship of your DIY project.

   Layer Your Cushion: On a clean work surface, lay your chosen fabric right side down. Next, center your pillow form or 2-inch foam cushion on top of the fabric. Finally, place the plywood base on top of the cushion with its painted side facing up (this will become the underside of your finished cushion). Ensure all layers are aligned and centered before proceeding. This careful layering prevents crooked cushions and ensures an even distribution of padding.

   

   Variation Tip: If you’re using a pillow form, a helpful trick is to first staple the four corners of the pillow form directly to the corresponding corners of the plywood. This secures the pillow in place and prevents it from shifting as you wrap the fabric, making the subsequent steps much easier.

   Wrap and Staple the Fabric: Now, carefully bring the edges of the fabric up and over the cushion and plywood layers. Then, pull the fabric tautly across the cushion and plywood, ensuring there are no wrinkles or slack, and begin stapling it securely to the underside of the plywood. Work your way around, pulling firmly to maintain an even tension. Pay special attention to the corners, folding them neatly to avoid bulk.

   Attach Your Chalkboard Label: Carefully remove any existing twine or hanging mechanism from your chalkboard sign. Replace it with a 30-inch long piece of your chosen ribbon.
