Continuing our quick indoor passage, we move past the family room. Here, while major overhauls are reserved for other seasons, I introduce lighter throws and perhaps a strategically placed vase of fresh-cut garden flowers to reflect the outdoor vibrancy. As soon as the weather graces us with its warmth, this is where you’ll find me. Our backyard is more than just a space; it’s where life feels effortlessly easy, fresh, and delightfully breezy – at least until the peak August heat sets in. It’s a haven of carefree living, our very own slice of paradise that my husband, Ed, and I meticulously crafted with our own hands. We poured our efforts into DIY projects on a strict budget, allowing us to splurge on a dream feature 15 years ago: a swimming pool.
That pool proved to be one of our best decisions, particularly during our daughters’ formative years. It became the backdrop for countless cherished memories. I still vividly recall the time the entire high school girls’ cross country team challenged themselves to see how many could fit into our hot tub. The answer? A staggering 30 girls! Those were the days filled with laughter, splashes, and unbounded youthful energy.
When designing our backyard, my primary intention was to create an irresistible invitation for friends and family to simply unwind. I wanted a space where everyone would feel naturally inclined to grab a refreshing drink, lean back, take a leisurely dip, and utterly relax. Because, after all, it’s sum…sum…Summertime!
After enduring what often feels like an interminably long and brutal winter, I believe we’ve all accumulated more than enough reasons to savor every moment of the season of sunshine and good times. This is the period for shedding shoes and going barefoot, firing up the BBQ for delicious outdoor meals, swimming until contented exhaustion, spreading a blanket for a charming picnic on the lawn, and indulging in the sheer delight of dining alfresco under the open sky.

Crafting the Perfect Outdoor Entertaining Zone

These wonderful rockers, crafted from recycled plastic milk jugs, have quickly become my absolute favorite spot to settle in. They are surprisingly heavy, yet portable enough to be moved back and forth to the main patio area, which seems to be where everyone naturally gravitates when we have a gathering. Up on the deck, you’ll find the outdoor dining set that I lovingly painted just last summer. This is our go-to spot when we’re hosting more than four people for dinner or a delightful weekend brunch. However, it’s funny how often everyone prefers gathering around the smaller, more intimate table down by the pool. We’ve certainly moved that versatile little table from the deck to the patio by the pool on more than one occasion to accommodate this preference!
I recently unearthed a fantastic, generously sized rectangular basket at my local thrift store for a mere $6.90. My vision for it is to transform it into a stylish holder for ice, keeping sodas, beers, and bottled water perfectly chilled for our outdoor gatherings. It’s not quite completed, but I promise to share a detailed post about its transformation once it’s ready. As long as the weather permits – meaning, no rain – we make it a point to dine outdoors every single night.
