Exploring Detroit’s Automotive Legacy: An Unforgettable Journey with Ford

Embarking on this blogging adventure, I never imagined the incredible opportunities it would unveil, particularly the chance to travel to fascinating destinations and experience events I might otherwise never encounter. These journeys have taken me to distant locales, immersing me in unique cultures and groundbreaking innovations.

Just last week, one such extraordinary opportunity arose when the Ford Motor Company extended an invitation to attend their 3-day Digital Summit in Detroit, coinciding with the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). I joined 149 other bloggers from around the world for what promised to be an illuminating experience. Having previously attended a Ford event in June, I knew to expect nothing less than exceptional hospitality. Ford truly exceeded all expectations, greeting us at the airport and whisking us away in comfortable Ford vehicles to our hotel. Our chauffeurs, a wonderful group of local active and retired police and firefighters, shared fascinating insights about the city. We were treated to exquisite dining experiences and an overall itinerary that left us utterly captivated – a truly magnificent trip from start to finish!

A Global Gathering of Innovators and Storytellers

This particular trip presented a different dynamic from my previous Ford engagement; I was the sole home/DIY blogger in attendance, which offered a unique perspective. The diversity among my fellow bloggers was remarkable. While waiting at the airport, I first met Tanya, a vibrant mom blogger from South Africa. Next was Greg, the renowned Tornado Hunter from Canada, followed by Ollie, an insightful business start-up blogger from Indonesia, and Lyndon, a tech enthusiast from England. Lenore, another mom blogger from NYC, and Lesley, who specializes in natural DIY beauty products from Colorado, completed our initial circle. This melting pot of backgrounds and expertise enriched every conversation and interaction throughout the summit.

While Ford undoubtedly aimed to ignite our enthusiasm for their cutting-edge innovations – the hybrid Fusion, the intuitive AppLink technology, and the highly anticipated Atlas concept truck – my inspiration stretched far beyond these impressive displays. As remarkable as they all were, my attention was drawn to something much deeper, something foundational to the entire experience.

What truly resonated with me throughout the journey was the towering figure of Henry Ford himself – the man, his pioneering vision, and his relentless spirit as an innovator. His foresight to establish a company over 150 years ago, a company that has not only endured but thrived, speaks volumes. His innovation and ingenuity at every turn left me uttering “amazing” with genuine awe. It was a profound reminder of the power of a singular vision to shape industries and impact the world for generations.

Although the final day offered the thrilling opportunity to sit in several sleek, cool cars and momentarily fantasize about them being mine, the true pinnacle of my Detroit experience was undoubtedly the visit to The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation.

The Henry Ford Museum: A Journey Through American Innovation

I would have happily made the journey to Detroit solely for the museum, and I fully intend to return, as the time allotted was simply not enough to fully absorb its vastness. It stands as the most exceptional museum of American history I have ever had the privilege to explore, far surpassing my expectations and, dare I say, even the Smithsonian. It’s not merely a collection of artifacts; it’s an engaging, immersive, and profoundly interesting place that captivates visitors of all ages.

This museum alone justifies a trip to Detroit. One could easily get lost within its walls for days, so utterly fascinating is its scope and presentation. The Henry Ford Museum is truly awe-inspiring, and crucially, it is not solely about cars. At every turn, I found myself smiling, wishing my family were with me, knowing they would have cherished it as much as I did. The museum’s organizers had to gently usher me out when it was time to leave; I was so engrossed that I hadn’t noticed the time slipping away. I longed to stay longer, with so much more left to discover and admire.

The museum’s expansive, single-floor layout, featuring dramatic 40-foot ceilings and exquisite wooden floors, spans an impressive nine acres. It is meticulously dedicated to showcasing the finest collection of its kind ever assembled – a meticulously preserved array of artifacts for all to see. I vividly remember gazing at a gleaming turquoise Edsel, imagining myself jumping in with my girlfriends, cruising in vintage style, and enjoying a carefree drive.

Among the most emotionally resonant and popular exhibits were the bus on which Rosa Parks was arrested – a powerful experience where I sat in the very seat she refused to give up, listening to her story recounted in her own voice. Seeing the limousine in which President Kennedy was assassinated and the chair Lincoln sat in on the day of his assassination up close and personal was, once again, profoundly moving. These artifacts are not just historical items; they are tangible links to pivotal moments in American history, allowing visitors to connect with the past on a deeply personal level.

Our exclusive evening at the museum was even more special as it was closed to the general public. Food and drink stations, set up buffet style, allowed us to freely roam the vast halls, indulging in delicious treats. I felt like a child in a grand candy store, especially with a dedicated candy station offering paper bags for us to fill with sweets as we explored. The sheer scale and diversity of the exhibits often took my breath away – planes majestically suspended from the ceilings, colossal locomotives, and ornate steam engines, some as grand as McMansions, all displayed for us to admire every glorious detail of their construction. There was a comprehensive furniture exhibit, and a captivating “walk down memory lane” section for each decade, showcasing popular items that defined each era. My desire to return is immense. The Rouge Factory Tour: Where Innovation Comes to Life

The following morning, we embarked on a tour of the legendary Ford Rouge Factory, a site where some of the first Ford vehicles were manufactured back in 1917. The experience was akin to visiting an industrial Disneyland. We began with two engaging films: one chronicling the life and vision of Henry Ford, and another detailing the rich history and evolution of the company. Following this, we were led into the heart of the actual factory to witness the meticulous production of F-150 trucks. Far from the grimy, dark factories of the past, this was a surprisingly bright, clean, and cheerful environment, buzzing with controlled energy and efficiency.

The intricate detail and precise logistics that govern the automated production line are truly astounding, synchronized with exacting precision. Witnessing this process transformed my perception of a car; I will never look at one the same way again. Every minute component, down to the smallest sticker on the door jamb, is placed with human care. We were not permitted to take photos, a challenge given the overwhelming desire to capture every aspect of this truly marvelous display of technology and innovation.

Ford’s commitment to sustainability was strikingly evident throughout the Rouge plant. The paint plant, for instance, ingeniously converts paint fumes into fuel, demonstrating a circular economy approach. Furthermore, the world’s largest living roof, spanning an impressive 10.4 acres, covers the entire Rouge plant. This green roof not only helps reduce operating costs but also significantly benefits the environment by improving air quality and managing stormwater. These initiatives are just a few examples of Ford’s dedication to creating a more sustainable imprint on our planet and leading the way in eco-friendly manufacturing.

Perhaps one day, I can acquire one of these innovative fuel cells for my own home. Considering the amount of paint and spray paint I use for my DIY projects, I could probably power my entire neighborhood! With such a system installed, it would clearly cover my electric bill every month – a delightful thought!

The North American International Auto Show: A Glimpse into the Future

The main event for this summit was, of course, the grand display of Ford vehicles at The International Auto Show. We were treated to front-row seats for a spectacular, rock-concert-style production that unveiled new concept cars to the media. It was an exhilarating showcase of fun, sleek new designs integrated with cutting-edge technology, including voice command apps that eliminate the need for hands-on controls. The dramatic reveal of the new Atlas concept truck was a highlight, lowered from the ceiling amidst a dynamic display of men working on girders behind it – truly a rock concert atmosphere, with the Atlas as the undisputed star.

On our final day, stepping into the massive arena hosting the North American International Auto Show, my first thought was immediately clear: there were no economic cutbacks evident here. This show was entirely dedicated to the “WOW factor,” and, quite humorously, a significant presence of men! If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you might recall my playful tweet suggesting that all single women seeking love should head straight to the auto show – there was certainly no shortage of dashing gentlemen present.

After three days of non-stop activities and sensory overload, I was more than content to settle into one of the many comfy, swiveling chairs available, designed to offer a panoramic view of the exhibits. These chairs ingeniously incorporated what looked like an armrest that doubled as a desk, perfect for bloggers like myself to use our phones and craft social media updates. It was a thoughtful touch that underscored the modern, connected nature of the event.

Our experience masterfully blended a trip down memory lane with a leap into the modern era, showcasing everything from classic automotive masterpieces to the latest hybrid vehicles. It was a comprehensive narrative of automotive evolution.

And I certainly cannot conclude without mentioning the food! We were incredibly well-fed throughout the trip. Every meal was a delightful culinary experience, featuring delicious dishes presented with artistry and flair, ensuring we were never hungry.
