In life’s vast tapestry of endeavors, few undertakings truly stand out as monumental. Yet, for me, two particular DIY projects have transcended the ordinary, becoming the most profound and cherished creations I have ever embarked upon. This journey began many years ago, a testament to long-term commitment and unwavering dedication.
While I’ve poured countless hours, immense love, and unwavering effort into these projects, I cannot claim sole credit for their magnificent outcome. They are, in every sense, a joint masterpiece, a collaborative effort made possible by the invaluable assistance of my dear husband, Ed. From their very conception, he has been my steadfast partner, sharing every step, every triumph, and every challenge along the way.

Let me be clear: these were not “easy” projects. Far from it. They remain ongoing, evolving with each passing day, and have certainly presented their fair share of typical DIY glitches, unexpected detours, and moments of utter frustration. We had no pre-written manual or step-by-step tutorial to guide us. Instead, we navigated by instinct, fueled by an abundance of tender loving care, boundless patience, and an endless supply of time and attention. It’s the kind of project that demands your entire being, transforming you even as you nurture it.
Perhaps you, too, are intimately familiar with these extraordinary undertakings, as they are surprisingly common in the realm of do-it-yourself endeavors. Your personal projects may not yet be as far along in their development as mine, but rest assured, the fundamental steps involved in their completion, and the profound emotional investment required, remain universally consistent. Working on these can be exasperating at times, especially when you’ve been nurturing them for what feels like a lifetime—nearly thirteen years in my case. However, I am confident that in the end, the sheer delight and immense pride you feel for your own completed projects will mirror the joy I find in mine. They are, without a doubt, the most rewarding creations of all.
My Most Cherished DIY Projects: A Journey Through Parenthood
Reflecting on the early stages of these two precious projects brings forth a bittersweet cocktail of laughter and tears. Time, it seems, has an astonishing way of accelerating when you’re deeply immersed in such an endeavor. One moment, they were mere miniature versions of themselves, like real-life dollies, small enough to cradle and carry with you everywhere you went, utterly dependent and exquisitely innocent.

But that’s the nature of these particular projects, isn’t it? They never stop growing. They consistently evolve, presenting new challenges and unveiling new wonders with astonishing speed. It’s a journey marked by constant change, a dynamic process that forever keeps you on your toes.

Oh, if only we could rewind, pause time, and savor those fleeting moments just a little longer! But alas, the clock marches relentlessly forward. These extraordinary projects are perpetually moving, transforming from dependent infants into independent adults, seemingly in the blink of an eye. One moment you’re marveling at their first steps, the next you’re witnessing their confident strides into the world, their growth an unstoppable force of nature.
Then, in what feels like an instantaneous transition—a mere flicker of time—they are pretty much complete, fully grown, ready to embark on their own journeys. The hands-on phase of these projects subtly shifts, and you find yourself observing their unfolding lives from a slightly different vantage point.

From Playtime to Real-Life Adventures: Watching My Daughters Soar
It feels like only yesterday they were perched precariously on brightly colored toy horses, their imaginations galloping freely in our living room or backyard. These were the simple, innocent joys of early childhood, filled with make-believe and endless wonder. Their laughter echoed through the house, a constant soundtrack to our daily lives.

Then, before you truly grasp the passage of time, those playful fantasies transition into exhilarating realities. Suddenly, those same little girls are confidently riding actual horses, mastering equitation, and leaping over jumps with grace and skill. It’s a magnificent transformation, a powerful reminder of how rapidly our “projects” develop and acquire new abilities.
In their earliest stages, when my two projects were still quite new and delicate, they couldn’t be left unsupervised near water. Essential “water wings” were a mandatory accessory, providing comfort and safety as they timidly explored aquatic environments. We carefully supervised every splash, every tentative kick, ensuring their security and gradually building their confidence.

Then, another one of those magical “blinks” occurred, and suddenly, they could fly through the water with an effortless grace, no longer needing any artificial aids. From tentative splashes to powerful strokes, they transformed into confident swimmers, navigating the depths with skill and independence. It’s a testament to their innate ability to learn and adapt, and a rewarding sight for any parent.

Their early sustenance came from baby bottles, filled with formula, carefully warmed and offered with tender hands. These were the very basic building blocks of their development, ensuring their health and growth during their foundational years. Every feeding was an intimate moment, a cornerstone of our bonding.

Fast forward through the years, and now, these sophisticated young women confidently belly up to the bar for Mardi Gras celebrations, sharing laughter and perhaps even sampling a craft beer from a bottle. The transition from baby formula to adult beverages is a powerful symbol of their journey, highlighting their growing independence and the unique paths they’ve carved for themselves.

From Play Cars to Real Drives: The Road to Independence
I distinctly recall the sheer delight in her eyes as she navigated her bright pink Barbie car, its plastic wheels whirring across the driveway. These early attempts at “driving” were filled with innocent joy and a budding sense of autonomy, foreshadowing the independence that lay ahead. It was a simple pleasure, yet profoundly significant.

Later, the thrill escalated with bumper cars on the bustling Ocean City, NJ Boardwalk. The shouts of glee, the controlled collisions, and the exhilaration of momentary independence behind the wheel were etched into our family memories. These playful experiences were essential stepping stones, building confidence and motor skills in a fun, engaging environment.

Then, in yet another swift transition, she was behind the wheel of a real car, navigating actual roads, and possessing the freedom that comes with a driver’s license. The journey from a toy car to a legitimate vehicle symbolizes a monumental leap towards self-reliance, a defining moment in the development of any “DIY project.” It’s a moment filled with both pride and a touch of trepidation for any parent.

From Childhood Frocks to Graduation Gowns: Milestones Achieved
They used to absolutely adore dressing up, twirling in pretty dresses for every holiday and special occasion. These early sartorial adventures were filled with giggles and joyful anticipation, each outfit a tiny statement of their burgeoning personalities. We have countless photos capturing these charming moments, memories to treasure.
And oh, the multitude of beautiful dresses they accumulated, many worn only once for a specific event – a wedding, a school play, a family gathering. Each dress holds a story, a snapshot of a fleeting moment in their childhood. These garments weren’t just clothes; they were artifacts of their development, marking different stages of their lives, always with a touch of elegance.
The first day of school was always a significant milestone. Those adorable pictures of them waiting for the bus, backpacks almost as big as they were, represent the beginning of their formal education – another critical phase in their development. It’s a blend of excitement for the unknown and a tinge of sadness as they step further into the world beyond our immediate care.
This journey through education unfolded rapidly, marked by one graduation after another. From the charming ceremonies of preschool, where tiny caps and gowns adorned their excited faces, to the more formal rites of passage.

Then came the momentous high school graduations, filled with proud cheers and bittersweet goodbyes as they prepared for the next chapter of their lives. Each stage represented significant growth, a testament to their hard work and dedication, and our ongoing support.

And finally, the pinnacle: college graduations. These ceremonies symbolize the culmination of years of effort, intellectual curiosity, and personal development. To see them walk across that stage, ready to face the world, is an unparalleled feeling of accomplishment for any parent who has invested so much into their “projects.”

Of course, no “project” is without its necessary adjustments. Crooked teeth led to years of orthodontist visits, countless appointments, and the expenditure of thousands of dollars. It was a significant investment, both in time and finances, but one we undertook without hesitation, knowing the long-term benefits.

And was it worth every single cent? Absolutely! The radiant smiles that emerged from those years of dedication are utterly priceless. It’s a testament to the belief that investing in these projects yields immeasurable returns, not just in aesthetics, but in confidence and well-being. Their genuine happiness is the ultimate reward.

Launching into the World: The Empty Nest Begins
The bittersweet moments continue. The next thing you know, you’re standing at a bustling train station, tears welling in your eyes, bidding farewell as “Project #1” embarks on a remarkable 27-month journey across the globe with the Peace Corps. It’s a moment of immense pride mixed with the profound sadness of separation, a true testament to the courage and independence you’ve fostered in them.

And just this week, my husband Ed and I found ourselves in a similar scenario, helping “Project #2” move into her very first college apartment, stepping beyond the confines of the dorms. She won’t be returning home this summer, choosing instead to work and further establish her independence in her college town. Each step they take away from the nest is a powerful, emotional experience, marking their transition into fully self-sufficient individuals.
The profound truth of these projects is that you truly only get one chance to cultivate them, to pour your love and effort into making them beautiful. Tomorrow will arrive before you even realize it, swift and unforgiving in its passage. Therefore, it is imperative to savor every single moment, to immerse yourself in the present, for in a mere blink of an eye, your yesterdays will have vanished. What remains are cherished memories, sweet as honey, and a home that, while quieter, is filled with the echoes of a vibrant past. The “empty nest” isn’t truly empty; it’s simply rearranged, making space for new adventures and a different kind of fulfillment.
Embracing the Quiet: Life in an Empty Nest
The house is quiet now. A profound stillness has settled, a noticeable change from the bustling energy that once defined our home. It’s just Ed and I, navigating this new chapter. There are no longer streams of friends passing through, their cheerful “Hi, Mr and Mrs H, how ya doing?” a distant echo. The days of speakers blasting music at full volume, or the pantry and refrigerator constantly stocked with junk food for hungry teenagers, are firmly in the past. We no longer organize impromptu pool parties where the high school cross-country team attempts to set a world record for the most people crammed into a hot tub. That vibrant, youthful chaos has gracefully exited, leaving a different kind of peace.
There is significantly less laundry now—practically none, in fact. Their rooms, once alive with personality and activity, now resemble museums, empty of their vibrant presence but filled with curated exhibits of their childhoods, each item a relic of a beautiful past. The house no longer vibrates with their laughter, their conversations, or their constant comings and goings. It’s a profound stillness, one that I am slowly, but surely, beginning to adjust to, finding a new rhythm in its quietude.
I must reiterate that these two incredible projects would never have blossomed into the remarkable young women they are without giving my beloved husband, Ed, half the credit. He has been, without a doubt, the most hands-on, loving, and supportive father imaginable. His unwavering dedication, endless patience, and boundless affection were instrumental in shaping them. So, thank you, honey, for being such an extraordinary partner in this grandest of all DIY adventures. x o
Now, a fun new adventure unfolds for me: a time of rediscovery and personal pursuits. While many of you are currently adjusting to your “projects” being home from school for the summer, I am experiencing the opposite end of the spectrum. This is my very first summer without “Project #1” and “Project #2” around, a novel sensation that carries both a touch of nostalgia and a fresh sense of possibility.
I now have the luxury of reading a book on the beach without the constant worry of losing sight of one of them in the waves. The days of carpools, parent-teacher conferences, late-night homework assistance, endless recitals, school dances, and meticulously packed bag lunches are behind me. This new phase of life, while undeniably different, brings with it a newfound freedom and the opportunity to focus on personal passions and relaxation.
I will embrace and thoroughly enjoy this new season of my life, finding immense satisfaction in seeing them both grown up, happy, and thriving. Yet, deep in my heart, they will forever remain those precious, real-life little dollies—my two greatest DIY projects, forever cherished and eternally loved. This journey of parenthood, though demanding, is undoubtedly the most fulfilling and rewarding “project” one can ever undertake.
