Not anymore, though! Those very same doors have been given a magnificent new lease on life. I’ve successfully recreated the door-based headboard, this time with a slightly different design approach, to craft a brand-new, equally impressive focal point for the master bedroom in our lake house.
This latest headboard iteration was designed to replace a pair of semi-upholstered twin headboards that previously adorned the wall. While I appreciated the comfort and aesthetic of the former headboards, they lacked the vertical presence I truly desired. The wall space above them often felt empty, creating an imbalance in the room’s design. My goal was to create a commanding piece that filled the space beautifully, contributing to a minimal, casual, and effortlessly carefree atmosphere without the need for additional wall art above the bed.
In our Pennsylvania home, where the original headboard was built, the absence of crown molding allowed us to extend the doors all the way to the ceiling, creating an expansive, integrated look. We then added custom crown molding directly to the top of the doors, blending the headboard seamlessly with the room’s architecture.
Here at the lake house, the room already features elegant crown molding, influencing a different design strategy. To integrate harmoniously with the existing trim, we precisely cut the doors to a height that would span approximately three-quarters of the way up the wall. Despite the minor complexities, through careful adjustments and a collaborative effort, we successfully navigated the installation, ensuring every piece fit seamlessly and securely.
With the headboard proudly in place, my focus has now shifted to refreshing the bedding for the upcoming spring and summer seasons. For this particular photo, I temporarily borrowed a DIY no-sew throw pillow from the living room and placed it on the bed. Supplies Needed:
- Bifold doors: For a king-size bed, you will typically need 5 doors. Look for solid core doors for better durability and a more substantial feel.
- Two (2) – 2″ x 4″ x 8′ lumber pieces: These will form the structural support frames.
- One (1) – 1″ x 4″ x 8′ lumber piece: Used for the main horizontal trim element.
- One (1) – Alexandria Moulding 1-3/16 in. x 3-3/4 in. x 8′ Primed MDF Crosshead Moulding: This decorative molding, often found at Home Depot, adds an elegant touch to the top.

- One (1) – 8′ length of base shoe molding: Used for additional decorative trim.

- Paint: Sherwin Williams Pure White 7005 in a semi-gloss finish is recommended for durability and easy cleaning.
- Paint brush, small paint roller, and paint tray: For efficient and smooth paint application.
- Spackle and caulk: For filling nail holes, screw depressions, and sealing gaps between molding pieces.
- Spackle knife: For smooth application of spackle.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR A FLAWLESS FINISH: During my initial installation, I made the mistake of not finishing the raw, cut edges of the two outermost doors and molding pieces *before* attaching them to the wall. Step-by-Step: How to Securely Attach Doors to Wall Studs
For maximum stability and safety, use 2-1/2″ or 3″ long wood screws to firmly attach the doors and the 2″ x 4″ lumber pieces directly into the wall studs. Ensure all screws are countersunk for a smooth, hidden finish that can be easily filled later.
- Begin by determining the desired overall height for your headboard. Measure carefully from the floor up. Remember to account for and add an additional 5-1/2 inches to this measurement, which will accommodate the decorative top molding assembly. This initial measurement is crucial for a well-proportioned headboard.
- Using a reliable bubble level, precisely attach your first 2″ x 4″ lumber piece to the wall at the predetermined height. This piece will serve as the foundational support for your doors. Ensure it is perfectly level and securely fastened into wall studs.
3. Carefully place each door onto the securely attached 2″ x 4″ base. With the doors resting on this support, proceed to attach them to the wall. Utilize a stud finder to accurately locate the wall studs, ensuring that your screws penetrate these structural elements for maximum stability. This step forms the sturdy base of your headboard structure.
4. Once the doors are in place, position the second 2″ x 4″ lumber piece horizontally directly on top of the installed doors. This piece will provide crucial upper support and a level surface for the subsequent molding layers.
5. Next, carefully place the primed 1″ x 4″ lumber piece directly on top of the second 2″ x 4″. 8. The cove molding is the next piece to be added. Secure it along the bottom edge of the 1″ x 4″ using small finishing nails or a strong adhesive like Liquid Nails. This adds another layer of subtle, classic detail to the headboard’s top profile.
9. Using a miter saw, carefully cut pieces of both the cove and shoe molding to precisely wrap around the exposed ends of the headboard, creating a seamless, finished look. Once these pieces are in place, fill any small gaps or imperfections with caulk or Spackle, ensuring a smooth surface for painting.
10. The finishing touches before painting are crucial for a professional result. Fill all nail holes and the depressions from the countersunk screws with Spackle. Allow it to dry completely, then sand these areas smooth until they are flush with the surrounding surface. Subsequently, apply caulk to fill any remaining gaps between the various molding pieces and where the headboard meets the wall, creating a clean, seamless appearance. Let the caulk dry thoroughly according to manufacturer instructions.

For the recessed areas within the door panels and the intricate details of the molding, a 1-inch angled paint brush will allow for precise application and excellent coverage.
There might still be a need for a minor touch-up on this particular end of the headboard. A gentle sanding with 220-grit sandpaper followed by a dab of fresh paint should perfect it. However, generally, two carefully applied coats of quality paint will provide ample and beautiful coverage for your newly crafted headboard.
